Getting ready to rotate engine & replace my Rear Cylinder Rocker Cover Gaskets (both) due to a leak - very common, I guess. Any thoughts on the install of the new gasket, to assure myself it doesn't leak again? RTV? Dance in the moonlight, etc.? I'm intending to use the HD (top end) gasket kit 17036-91A ... per the service/parts manual. Thanks (Message edited by johnboy777 on September 06, 2011) | ||

I just spoke with the Cometic Tech Line (1-440-354-0777) and they said their part number for a 2007 Buell XB12 was C9954 @ $45.92 But online, it says the C9954 is for 04-06 1200/883 Sportsters. And shows a different part# (C9195) for ALL 07-UP Sportsters. ... | ||

From what's been posted here, make sure all your mating surfaces are perfectly flat. Some people have done multiple gasket replacements only to find out they had a mating surface problem. If you find something that's not perfectly flat, try sanding with a piece of fine emery cloth on a piece of flat glass. I wouldn't use RTV or anything like that. These rubber coated metal gaskets are 100% oil-tight if properly installed. | ||

I initially thought that my lower rocker box gasket was leaking and purchased a new gasket set to fix the problem. On teardown, found out the my middle rocker box cover seal GROOVE was too deep and the seal couldn't seal the leak because it couldn't "reach" the upper rocker cover (gap was causing the leak). I ended up putting a bead of silicone in the groove to fill it in a little, letting it harden up and then installed the seal in (what was left of)the groove. Seems to be working, hasn't leaked since....... |
