Ok, it's a bit embarrassing, but I have been riding my Uly with the suspension settings it had when I picked it up from the dealer. I am not a particularly aggressive rider (relatively speaking anyway) and I know next to nothing about suspension settings, so I have been a bit intimidated to mess with things. Besides, I haven't had any complaints about the ride or handling.

I got to thinking, though, that maybe it was a case of I didn't know what I was missing, so I decided to set things up according to the owners manual for my weight and gear.

With today being a holiday and having a little time, I went out to give it a shot. I didn't have any problems with the rear preload, but when I went to adjust the preload on the forks I ran into a problem.

According to the owner's manual, I am to turn the screw counterclockwise till it stops, which will be the minimum preload setting. Then, for my weight I am to turn the screw 9 turns clockwise. I can only get the left one to turn four turns before it tightens to the point I can't turn it anymore. I can only get the right one to turn 3 and one half turns before it stops.

Am I doing something wrong? This is why I was leaving it alone, but it seems simple enough.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nine turns certainly sounds wrong for any of the adjusters except for the rear load adjuster knob under the seat. The rest are within three turns stop to stop or so.

Might want to re read a little slower.

well the front preload you see it by lines not by turns, if you look at the top of the fork you will see lines for the preload, maybe you're confusing with the damping or rebound adjustment the preload is don't with a 22 or close by socket size.
i think this is 2006 but it will give you an idea of what i mean:

Well, I have a 2010 XT and the settings on page 97 of the owner's manual says from 8 turns for less than 170 pounds to 14 turns for over 320 pounds. On the opposite page for the X it says for 1-1/2 turns for under 170 pounds to 4 turns for 320 pounds. The forks on the X and XT are different, but this seems like a big difference in settings to me too, but I have double and triple checked the manual.

Interestingly enough, the settings for the Ss are 6 to 9 turns, the settings for the 9 and 12 SX are 3 to 9 turns.

The bottom line for me right now is that to go more than 4 turns on my forks I believe would cause damage. I did count on one side how many turns to get to minimum, I didn't think to count on the other one. But the one I counted was 2 turns in. I may just go to 2 1/2 or 3 and see how it rides. Like I said, I wasn't really unhappy with the ride I had, but I thought it might be even better if properly set up.

The suspension on Pontlee's 06 is different, hence the 06 book goes by lines and the newer bikes go by turns.

Not sure of the cause of your hangup though, it shouldn't do that.

Yes, you use a socket to back it out till it stops, which is minimum preload, then you turn it in X amount of turns till you get your desired setting.

Well, Vern helped me over the phone figure out what I was doing wrong. I had looked at the picture wrong and was adjusting the compression screw instead of the preload nut. So basically, the nut with the wrench was the problem.

You are welcome and you were correct about the turns on the PRELOAD.

As I said my '06 was probably different. Froggy and your manual proved yours is different than mine.
