Not that it matters but an xr650r is water cooled and makes about 60 hp an xr650l is the one you must mean.

I have 40k on my 2008 now. I have had no engine issues to report.

Went through a few rear wheel bearings before switching to a 2010 style. Lost the first belt at about 11,000 miles, carry a spare now. Replaced the voltage regulator at about 30k, added volt meter at the same time.

Other than that, lots of tires, oil changes and head light bulbs (Sylvania UltraStars, bright but short life).

I have been running with XB9 primary gears for over 30k miles, and have the Erik Buell Racing ECM now.

Reliable? Yeah, I think so. I would have no problem throwing a leg over the Uly and riding anywhere the fuel range will allow.

Reliable? Nope. Neither was my 2nd wife, but we were married for 25 years. If you want reliability buy a beemer, or marry your guitar.

My garage is crammed with bikes, including a high end beemer, but the Uly is the only one I ride, it is the funnerest scooter in my 45 year riding experience.

Ha HA! I bought my ULY because it sounds incredible compared to BMW/Rice Duel Sports. I also like the low center of gravity

I got an 08xt with 3000 miles on it from Hal`s Harley in 09 after the closing of Buell. It was in the rental fleet. The front brake was warped and pulsing but I rode for another 3000 miles knowing I had a 2 year warranty. I ride 2 up a lot and had the rear wheel bearings fail just in time to miss the years Buell gathering due to parts availability. I ended up with the 2010 wheel and new rotor and pads all covered by Harley. What I`ve had since July last year has been a wonderfully fun and sorted out trouble free ride. Just turned the 24000 mile mark touring the Black Hills a couple weeks ago with wifey on board.
I really enjoy this bike!
