While in for the GP, my son and I were riding the beautiful roads south of indy. I happened to look down and noticed that my voltage indicator had one amber and one red bars showing. I moved my GPS so it was not obscuring the right side dash and found the yellow "V" light on. We stopped at a gas station to investigate. I pulled the seat and checked for loose cables. All were tight. Disconnected/reconnected the VR connections near the left scoop and restarted. No good. We were in a gas station in Nashville IN about 80 miles from my sons house on the north side of Indy. Do I try to make it to his house or try to make it 20 miles to HD/Buell of Bloomington. I decided to take the lesser risk and ride to the shop. I installed an HID low beam and a switch so I turned off the light. Fortunately the ride was uneventful except for a 35 minuet traffic jam in a road work zone. Nothing worse than seeing the shop in the distance but being stuck with no way to get there. The bike was getting hot so the fan was cycling on and off. I dared not shut the bike down in case the battery charge was getting to low to restart. We did make it to the dealer and the bike did start on it's own. Must be charging just enough to maintain the battery with the lights off.

The failure appeared abruptly. I left a 6:00 am the morning of the ride and the voltage indicator was the normal 3 green bars. I assume it to be the VR or stator. I will find out the culprit Tuesday when the open after the weekend.

It was very comforting to see 5 Buell's parked in the lot belonging to the employees. Nice to go to a dealer that still rides them.

My bike is a 08XT with 33K miles.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but glad you made it to the shop. They are good people.

Looking forward to hearing how this works out. I have an 09 with similar mileage. I had hoped the VR/stator issues were confined to 07 and earlier bikes.

Missed you Tim. What's the update? Took me some effort to find a stator. Can't seem to find a suitable aftermarket one.

In another thread this shop said they could rebuild Buell stators.

VR on my 09 Uly went out at 12,000 miles. Got a new one from American Sport Bike. Been hearing of other '08-'09 VR's going bad. They were on backorder from Harley, that makes me think people were buying them.

Just in, stator is dead. The shop has ordered one and they are in stock. I had them order a VR to keep as a spare. The bike should be back on the road soon.
