My new 2010 bike has developed a fault and in the great tradition of Uly faults its an electrical gremlin. As it happens it is in the "super league" of very weird electrical faults that plague the bike. You know the type the ones that make you want to hammer a six inch nail through your head to make the PAIN go away.

It was running perfect until about 10 days ago then it started missing every now and then.

It runs ok from cold and even though the can motor cycles it does not control. It did control because I could hear it working. Now when it gets hot it will miss on pulling away and the hotter the engine gets the worse it is. It also does it going over pot holes and bumps in the road.

Once I let it idle until the fan came on and blipped the throttle. The throttle response was slow and it would back fire into the throttle body. I could see the flash of burning fuel.

This seems to me like the timing is not being advanced as it should but here is the VERY weird part. The other day I parked on a steep camber and the engine just died on me. I did this several times with the same result. Then I lent the bike over and with the side stand up the engine did not cut out. I tried it with the sidestand switch disconnected but it still cut out and it still missed as before. It may be faulty though as it has 3 wires therefore 2 control loops.

I have spent the last 10 days doing the same trip. It does the same thing every time and even at the same places. I get nothing from the CEL and I checked/ cleaned the sub-frame Earth even though it had no paint on it.

I have had a quick look at the problem but I have little time to mess with it at the moment and since it is still under warranty the dealer is taking it for repairs.

Also the idle drops below 1000 rpm once it is hot and can be as low as 750 rpm which is far to low on this engine/bike.

my 2008 does the exact same things.
Never found a cure.
Also, it does it hot, cold, wet, dry. seems totally random.

I would check the ECM for cracks at the plug-in. My XT did all kinds of weird things when my ECM had a crack. While the bike is running, try wiggling the plugs going to the ECM and listen for a change in tone and speed. If you detect a change, at least you can let the servicing dealer know. The dealer had a tough time determining my problem since it was intermittent.

Try doing a fresh TPS - key on - crank throttle wide open for one second - off one second - repeat 3 times - then key off -

Count to 5

ALSO - if you ever disconnect a plug or wire - coat the fitting with dielectric grease.

then start it and ride it - see what happens

Loose intake boot can also cause similar symptoms. Do the TPS reset, make sure the TPS sensor hasn't come loose, and check the intake boot is completely on.

Good luck

I vote for ecm. Hotter it gets, the softer the seat, the more your hiney pushes down on the front plug to the ECM.

my ECM does not rub, nor touch the seat. And it is not cracked.

I bend the holding bracket down a little so it wouldn't.

Thanks for the info. I tried most things. The ECM looked fine and the seat was not on it but it could still be damaged.

The dealer has it now so I will let them have a bash at it.

The dealer replaced the side stand switch and that fixed that problem. Which is about right as I proved this myself.

They tried to re map the ECM, it would not have it, so they replaced it and its still the same. It has now been out on test with a data logger and the results sent to HD to see what they can make of it.

Check the ground leads to the frame and battery tray. Plauged my o8 for some time before I found it. They have poor continuity caused by the paint on the frame.

2010 bikes have no paint at that point but I cleaned it anyway. I think it is something like this but some place else.

Only mods done that would have an effect would be the breathers but is was ok. 4k miles.

Proper 2010 bikes are a whole different ball game to those before. I will fix the problem, I did it with my 06 Uly, it just may take some time and effort.
