I got to thinking that the reason my oil temps have creeped up over the miles and years was because the oil cooler fins needed cleaning. I removed the oil coolers air diverting plastic shroud which is as simple as removing two 1/4x20 socket head screws. First time I've done that. Then I tried spraying soapy water straight through with the spray tip up against the fins but it wouldn't come through the other side and certainly it should since air is meant to go through to cool the fins of their heat. I went to the car wash and and power washed the oil cooler completely. Road it home and tried hand spraying through again and it easily sprayed through. Don't know how long those fins have been clogged but I imagine it has been 2 or 3 years. Now I'll bet my oil temps revert back to what they were during the first two years of ownership. I'm not one to keep my bike spotless or anywhere near that but from now on I will keep the oil cooler clean of crud so it can do its job as intended. By the way, the oil cooler looked fine before the power washing, but internally the fins were completely clogged with dirt.  | ||

This sort of thing happens with cars all the time but few notice it. The Uly cooler is VERY exposed and this situation does not surprise me at all. The oil cooler matrix MUST be 100% clean to work right. | ||

I always spray the oil cooler with water when washing the bike. I spray through the opposite direction of air flow to make sure it is not clogged. It would not take much dirt to restrict flow since the fin spacing is tight. | ||

This is one of the things you need to do on a regular basis. It's even mentioned in the service manual as regular maintenance. |
