You wanna ask what oil people are running while you are at it?!


Pirelli Scorpion Syncs. Rarely go off road. Need to replace them within the next 6 mos. (forgot to add that I will pro'ly go with the Mich PR2 or PR3's)

The rear Scorp Sync hasn't lasted as long as I would have liked

I liked the syncs, but the rear goes at about 4k-5k miles, which got a little pricey. Switched to the Michilin PR2's, and they seem to turn a little better, and stick as well, and have a reputation for lasting a lot longer (too early for me to tell).

So I would say for the Uly, go with Scorpion Trails over the Sync. Deeper tread than Sync, should last longer. Or go with a street tire like the PR2.

Oh, and any 20w50 full synthetic I can get a good price on. I'd run the walmart syntech stuff if they made it in 20w50, but sadly they don't.

Given how much it has been costing me anyway, if I could find Amsoil, I'd buy it, but nobody local convenient I can find carries it.

Have you checked amsoil's website for a local supplier, you might be surprised, and most will ship to you as well, thats how I do it. Also, check the fleabay, see guys blowing out oil all the time....

I have Dunlop RoadSmarts on my XT at the present time. I don't like the way they wear and I won't buy them again.

Im running Bridgestone Battlax BT023s. The stock rear Pirelli on my XP only lasted about 3k. I managed almost 5k out of my last rear Bridgestone. Harley 20-50 dino oil for me.

Pirelli Scorpion trails. Best tire I have ever ran on. bike always had a high speed (above 100mph) head shake. but its gone with these on and they stick like glue.

I ran nothing but Pirelli Scorpion Syncs for the first ~29,000 miles on my Uly. I've got about 2000 miles on a set of Michelin PR3's now. I just finished my first trip to the twisties on them (area around Little Switzerland, NC).

I've very happy with them. The PR3's stick as well as the Syncs and they did great in the twisties. Handling is somewhat different from the OEM Pirelli Scorpion Syncs. The Syncs seemed to almost automatically drop over to the required lean angle in a turn whereas the PR3's seem to require a little more input. OTOH the PR3's seem to make it easier to pick different cornering lines/angles. I can't say one's better than the other; they're just different.

So far (2000 miles) wear is dramatically better on the PR3's than the Syncs. I had 1250 miles of 99% flat-and-straight miles on them before I got to the twisties, and there was virtually no flat spot in the middle of the tread. The Syncs would have been noticeably worn in the center in that many miles. After close to 500 miles in the twisties and 250 miles back home, the tread still looks nearly new and the tread profile looks like a new tire.

So far, I'm very satisfied.

PR2s... Have about 3k on the set I spooned on this spring and so far, so good. My bike at through syncs; was on the 3rd rear at about 8500 miles.

How are the Trails for mileage? I'm loving the PR2s, but they aren't so good for mud and loose stuff- learned that the hard way. Most of my riding is road, but also do enjoy getting lost once in a while. Maybe the Trails will be my next set.

Michelin PR 2's on the XT. Put between 4 and 5 K on them since I had them mounted in May and no sign of flat spotting. This is the first set I've had and my only complaint is the front still feels a little heavy at slow speeds. However, we've not tweaked the suspension yet to see if that helps.

Still have the Angels on the X. If PR2 mileage justifies the additional expense of the PR2's, we'll prolly put a set on the X as well.

I went thru five rear Scorpion Syncs on my 07, just about every 5K miles like clockwork. I got my 08 with Scorpion Trails and I can't notice any difference. The rear Trail experienced a puncture from a rock (!) two weeks ago, I only got punctures from nails on the Syncs. Don't tell my mom, I'm running it with a plug.

Okay, so I'll be the lone (so far) supporter of the Dunlop D616. Think they're pretty tough, carcass-wise, and haven't had the front tire "weaving" issue that most others note. Got 10K on the rear, 12K for the front, mostly commuting. Very good in the rain, although the tread of the PR3 is compelling as a replacement.

Also have a set of the Pirelli MT60-Rs on a separate wheel set, for more adventurous trips off the tarmac; these wear quickly. . .

They are cheap ($56 for the rear), but you need a KDX-200 to attach them onto ($900 to $1500 one time purchase).

I got a flat from a rock puncture in my almost bald Diablo Strada rear (08 XT) this spring right before HC. The emergency replacement I got was a Continental Motion. The have been "ok" in the little bit of gravel I've had them on, but they are basically new. No complaints with them on pavement so far.

Went through three sets of Syncs. Rears seemed easily punctured. I averaged about 12k from the rears, fronts went a bit longer.

Now have Dunlop D616s and like them very much. I'm at about 10k on them now and wear looks pretty good. I expect similar life to the Syncs.

D616 came on my'06, 6000 miles the rear was shot. Went to Syncs, I liked them but barely made it to 6,000 on each rear. Went to the PR2's and made 11,500 on the first rear, the second got it self destroyed by a sharp rock at 8,500. I will have to look up the miles on the current PR2, but I think it is in line to go 11,000 miles.

I found the PR2 more confidence inspiring and quicker to turn in than the Sync. Where running "fun" speeds on the Cherohala the Sync would easily be melted off to the sides, averaging about five miles per hour faster the PR2 would still leave just the edge of a chicken strip.

616 on the uly. all the way.

pr2's and pr3's on the pavement-only bikes...but the uly sees lots of dirt and gravel and mud as well as a lot of street time. 616 fills the bill every single time, no question.

heavy-handed, typically overloaded weight wise, and i get around 5k rear / 10k front. inexpensive as they are...i have zero complaints. no 'wander', no issues, no genetic problems.

just wish they'd come out with a dual compound version of the same tread, in the oem sizes...





they handle pretty darned nice, too : )

about 3500 miles on a set of PR3s, all pavement. They are my favorite so far, compared to syncs and D616s. Wear is going to be MUCH better as they still look almost new right now, with the bulk of the mileage being straight line commuting.

My riding is mostly straight, boring, flat roads with a dash of forest/cabin roads for now. If my riding style leads to more adventurous offroad stuff, i'll look into the d616's.

The scorpion trails are working great so far, I've have almost 5k on them, more than I've gotten out of any tire on either Buell. If you can stomach blowing a 150 out on the rear the Shinko 705 is awesome in the dirt, although it only made it 3k miles. They're under $100 though, and you'll have to run a 120/90 on the front to match it.

I changed to 616 on my 07 and loved them.

as far as amsoil, for $10.00 you can became a "preferred customer" for 6 months. I think the 20w50 cost around $8.50 quart then.
Then it's $20.00 per year after that.
Plus they will ship anything you want direct to your house.

Just put a set of Trails on after mostly using the Sync's...all I can say is WOW! These are the best tires I have had on my 50,000 mile Uly! They are super sticky, feel good on the dirt roads, effortlessly fall into the corners, and are the most confidence inspiring tire I have used since the time I tried the under sized Distanzia's. I really wanted to try the PR3's....but I'm going to have a hard time convincing myself to give up the Trails. BTW...I'm using the 180's.

I can't give you a comparison on motorcycle tires because my 2006 uly came with the Dunlops D616 and that's all I've ever had on it. They work very well with good traction and seem to wear better than the other brads I see what riders are getting out of those tires, so with that being said, I have no reason to change. I don't really do any off-road riding and was thinking about trying the Dunlop Road-Smarts but I've heard some negative comments on them so I will just stick with the D616's.

Running some Pirelli MT-60.

Good offroad (gravel light mud),
Excellent in the rain,
good on tarmac.

My front is still good even after doing 2,000km AFTER doing the trans-lab last year.

I am getting some funny wear patterns on it now though... suspect over inflation.
