I'm replacing my Uly's head tube bearings while in Colombia before heading into Venezuela. They're knockin' a bit and the roads don't get any smoother down south.

Uly is at a shop where the guys don't really know how to work on the bike (and I don't have tools for such a job!). We've managed to extract the old bearings and stuff in new ones. Almost reamed the frame getting them seated however ;-(

Tomorrow we go for re-assembly, finally. Can anyone tell me what the factory spec torque is for the steerer tube nut and both pinch bolts? I wouldn't be surprised if they start clicking again down the road as they fully seat. At least I can stop at any garage and give them a final tightening.

Thanks in advance
DB

From my ’07 manual-

Note: All pinch bolts use RED Loctite 271

1. Steering stem cap nut 38-42 ft-lbs (52-57 Nm)
2. Steering stem pinch bolt 20-22 ft-lbs (27-30 Nm)
3. Upper fork pinch bolts 23-25 ft-lbs (31-34 Nm) – 2x
4. Lower fork pinch bolts 20-22 ft-lbs (27-30 Nm) - 4x

Install procedure:

1. Install forks and hold with lower pinch bolts but do not torque
2. Stem cap nut tighten
3. Tighten stem pinch bolt
4. Tighten upper pinch bolts
5. Tighten lower pinch bolts

Thanks OD Cleaver,
Assuming same specs for '07 and '08. I'm on an '08.
Are your forks 43 or 47 mm?

43 or 47?

I don't know. I don't think that the differences between the '07 and '08 matter. Others on the board have put '08 triple trees on the earlier bikes.

You will need to wait for someone with an '08 to confirm.
