Just clicked over 10,000 miles. What does a 10k service at a dealer entail? Is it something I should just do myself?

(FYI, bought my 07' X used in Feb and have put over 6k on it since the purchase date. Previous owner used it as a paperweight obviously.)

In addition to the normal oil change and cable check/adjust stuff, they change the fork oil.

Unless you do a lot of off-roading, I would wait til 20,000 for that. at least that's what I did.

Funny this should come up. I just made an appointment with the dealer for my 10k. He estimated 730 Euros, here in Germany, to do it. Just over $1000. WTF. I understand 6.5 hours of work because the forks get changed, but really, a grand for a service. Time to get the manual and the torque wrench out.

Dude, I hope you are in Stuttgart, CPO Harley/Buell did my 10k (at 14.5k) and it was 1/2 that. I can also say thaT CPO did great things for my S3 as well as the Uly.

I had to replace my lower fork slider at 11,000 miles because it was bent(long story)anyway the fork oil was clean.
I now have 12,500 miles and my primary chain still seams tight so I may not adjust that for awhile.

Just to see what it was actually about, I ran the original fork oil to 54,000 miles when I blew out a fork seal. Having read the book on changing at 10,000, and seeing what mine did going over 50,000, I am going to make sure to change mine at about the 25,000 mile range in the future.

IMHO 10,000 would be necessary if you ran all track days or a lot of trail events. But for normal street use my forks needed adjustment to make up for the oils weakening damping abilities at about 25,000.

Beyond 30,000 I had to adjust the dampeners again to keep it in tune, and again at 40,000, from there on it was just not in tune and felt loose and sloppy.

When I changed it, it was dirty looking with little sign of very fine metallic powdering nor metal flakes. It was simply worn out oil. It stayed in tune well to about the 25,000 mile mark.

Vecchio- unfortunately Stuttgart is a bit far for a service. Time to buy the parts and do it myself. I'm riding about 1000k a week to and from work.

I bought my 06 new in oct. of 08 and when I got it home I pulled the chain inspection cover and my chain was bowstring tight.
I checked it at 5k and 10k now at 12.5k it is still less than 1/2 inch of movement.
What do you guys think about that?

i think you should read the service manual and set it for the proper amount of deflection...with the proper procedure.

Just clicked over 10,000 miles. "What does a 10k service at a dealer entail?" Mostly its a wish to spend stupid amounts of cash and a liking to say "Thank you Sir for taking the food out of my kids mouths".
