Hey Flyer what are your symptoms? Is your bike running? My dealer told me that because "its a high performance sportster engine" that it is normal for it to burn through 1 quart of oil in 600 miles. But I told him it was more like 2 quarts of oil. Inside the exhaust pipe outlet is VERY rich with carbon. Plus the Fuel pump doesn't work when you turn on the ignition switch. (Not the fuse AFAIK). Let us know your story.

Strike that I saw your post down below. Yeah, so I guess the 09's have fuel pump problems. But I wonder what at is causing the excessive blow by. Rings? Dealer says that if the open it up and it is within "spec" I am looking at about $900.00 in labor cost.

I guess they never heard of a compression and leakdown test?

I guess not! Trying to be the optimist. Dealer service guy did say that the nine engine is so much better. I would have to agree there however he also said and I quote "Not uncommon for the engine to have that kind of blow by in a high performance sportster engine in this heat. 1 quart for 600 miles is normal. Mine is worse.

I would definitely request that they do leakdown and compression checks before tearing into the engine.

BTW- I rode ~200 miles at 80 MPH in 100 degree heat Friday a week ago and then this past Monday going to the mountains of NC and back. 2009 XB12 engine; negligible oil usage.

As with other dry sump engines I've had you have to check the oil with the engine running.
The oil drains back out of the tank and you can't get an accurate reading.

Yeah I check when running and when just turned off after riding for awhile like the manual says. Oil seems to be trapped somewhere.

My 2008 would tear through a quart in under 500 miles when it was new.
It gradually improved to the point that I don't add any oil for thousands of miles.

What is the science behind using less oil as miles increase. I would imagine that the rings are seated well before my 7000 miles so what is the reason behind less oil consumption the higher the miles go? tanks

My oil consumption tapered off around 1000. and finally seemed to stop at 20,000

I kinda babied the bike for too long. Romping on it seemed to finish the break-in.
I never used synth in it.

Just returned from a trip through Texas, Colorado and Back around 3,000 miles. Maybe 5 oz oil use. 09 XT around 17,000 total. Bike was flawless whole trip.
