Specifically a Wolfman Rainer if youve got one.

I'm sitting here in the garage right now, just staring, a bit dumbfounded.

I've tried a few options for the back two straps, mainly around the subframe where the brake reservoir is, but then the strap comes up at an ackward angle off, not flush with the seat.

And as far as the front... No idea.

Ive seen some pics out there of people successfully using the Ranier, so I'd love to hear / see how your doing it.

Thanks!

The front straps with the plastic tabs I just stuffed under the front of the airbox cover after I loosened the front airbox cover screws. Then just tighten the screws back up to hold them in place. The rear straps require removal of the seat. Thread them through each side of the frame just behind where you see the rear part of the airbox screws. Be careful you don't pinch any of the wires or hoses that are hidden under that part of the frame. You may have to play with the adjustment and orientation of the straps but once adjusted they stay in place pretty well. I'll try and take a few pics tomorrow if you don't figure it out.

Not familiar with the Wolfie, but I made up a system for my smaller Rocket tank bag that mirrors the same attaching system as the Buell bags... The Rocket was magnet-only, which is obviously no good for us, so I bought a few fastex closures and had some excess web strapping laying around, so just sewed them up and put the attaching points on the four bolts for the air box cover.

I set the Rocket bag back further on the air box, so I don't have to unhook it for refueling.

Rear attachment is a "T" configuration with the two attachments on air box cover bolts (covered by the seat).

I have the big Buell tank bag for longer trips, but for day rides I just want something I can stow wallet, phone, camera, etc., etc. This works for me.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Sharkguy, does that really hold the bag sturdy enough? By just putting that little plastic tab under the "lip" of the fairing and boltig it down. I'd be nervous once I got some weight in there. The rear points you mentioned though, I discovered shortly after posting this.

Pnw_Uly, is there any kind of reinforcement there where the bolt is going through the webbing?

I found these pictures online and was trying to analyze what was going on...

It looks like he's doing the same thing you are with the straps, running the bolt right through it.

I feel like it would need a rivet or something though.

Don't think you need a rivet or grommet - - I just routered the hole in the webbing with a soldering iron. The nylon melts and pretty much seals itself, and the OEM attaching points for the Buell bag are constructed in an identical manner.

I actually thought I'd only need to fabricate the "female" ends and sew them to the Rocket bag, using the "male" fastening points from my Buell bag, but I know now that not all fastex fasteners are the same, even ones of identical size...(who knew?!?); so I had to make up the male ends too.

Here's the rear attachment setup:

If you decide to add grommets to the nylon webbing, you'll most likely need longer shoulder bolts to secure the air box.

Best of luck.

Thanks for this, I really appreciate the photos.
I'll have to mess around a bit and see what works best.

Still curious about sharkguy's approach as I don't think I have any extra webbing laying around, and don't really want to modify my existing straps.

That heat shielding isn't part of the standard comfort kit is it? When I bought my Buell, I was told it had the kit installed (have the right air scoop and the exhaust cover) but def don't have shielding like that.

You can get strap webbing at any "outdoor" store, or find it online (REI, Cabellas, CampMoor, etc.), and a lot of times they'll already have the fastex clips on them, so as long as the fastex clips are compatible - - just mod to fit...

The heat shield is the "Uly Maximum" from "Spec Ops", and it is not part of the upgraded Comfort Kit. I believe Spec Ops is a sponsor here; just google and you'll get it. Great product, super customer service, nothing wrong with supporting a fellow veteran.

It helps shielding the heat, and I also have the comfort kit and recently ceramic coated my headers and muffler with jet-hot 2000 degree coating.

Our temps aren't really hot compared to the south, (or even the northeast) but I commute in traffic, and although "Small potatoes make the steak look bigger" instead of baking them, I prefer keeping the junk cool . . .

YMMV

Thanks!

I might look into that.

I'm in NYC, and am a daily commuter in stop and go traffic.
And yea, I don't need to tell you how scary hot it gets at times.

Just last night I was out for a ride at 9 at night, was actually MOVING and I had to stop and get off.. It wasn't even that hot out.

I think I'm going to look into that. I'll also stop into a EMS today and pick up some webbing.

Thanks!

Jconly, yes there seems to be enough pressure to hold the front of the bag just fine. I've gone on a couple of long trips with the ranier mounted that way fully loaded and no problems so far. I did buy mine with the KLR mounting straps. I forgot to mention that. The front straps have hard plastic ends with a hole in each for mounting to the front of the KLR tank with existing screws. These are the ones I stuff under the air box cover. If you have those you could always enlarge the holes and use the front airbox cover bolts to mount them. I believe you would have to source some longer bolts though. I think that's why I just stuffed them under to begin with and have used it that way since. I also use this bag on my KLR and didn't want to enlarge the holes.

Much as I'd like to let this thread work its way down to the archives, need to identify a mistake on my Special O.P.s heat shields - - I have them mounted incorrectly; obviously the silver side should be down, and I had a brain fart when I put them back on this summer. . .

So, even though this is a tank bag thread, just don't want to pass along bad info on the shields - - they are a great piece of gear (and even better when installed correctly!!!)

Jconly, I have a standard tankbag that has a one piece strap with a buckle on each end. This usually wraps around the head stock and back on the other side and each end buckles to the bag base. Instead of wrapping around the headstock (not possible on the Buell) Starting on the outside of the airbox cover screw fold under the cover route across and behind the gas filler wall and out the other side and fold over the top at the other air box cover screw. Re fasten the screws and the strap will be captive with a buckle on each end showing just outside the cover. Do you have a 1 piece for you front strap. If not ??
