A few weeks ago, I did maintenance that consisted of; cleaning out the throttle body, cleaning the IAC, new NGK Iridium Plugs, new Magnacor 8.5 mm silicone plug wires, Erik Buell Racing Race ECM for standard exhaust, and K&N Air filter.

The bike ran great, did about a 600 mile ride in Wisconsin and had fun. Keep in mind that I wear foam earplugs most anytime I ride.

A couple days ago I rode to the gas station to fill up without ear plugs. When rolling on the throttle at around 2800 rpm, I hear a kind off clicking sound. The sound seems to diminish above 3300 rpm and is not apparent at all when accelerating hard above 3300.

I've not noticed the sound previous to installing the new components. I take the air box apart to make sure the plug boots were completely seated. They were fine. Cleaned the temperature sensor and cleaned the connector. Reassembled and rode around town. The sound is still there.

I removed the K&N filter and installed a stock filter. Rode around and the sound was greatly diminished. I reinstalled the K&N and left for a longer ride in the country. The sound returned at the same RPM range. It does not necessarily sound like pinging, but maybe it is. When tucking my head close to the intake cover, it sounds more like intake noise. Could it be the K&N filter allows more noticeable intake sounds? It does not sound like the same pinging I heard when I had to fill up with 87 octane gas while out in the boonies when accelerating hard.

What are the thoughts out there?

K&N filters don't muffle the induction noise as much as the paper stockers.

+1.

Ride a tuber with the open element carbon-fiber hamcan. Sounds like an engine knock from all the intake pulses.

My Ulysses, with opened up inner airbox and K&N...really HONKS when I whack the throttle. Stock muffler makes it even more noticable!
