2009 XB12XP

Idle will either go up to about 1800RPM or will die if I didn't give it gas. It will also want to die when I take off and is very sluggish until the RPMs were higher. This started a few weeks ago, but was intermittent. One minute I had the problem, the next it ran fine. It has gradually gotten worse, so now it is parked.

There is no CEL and no codes. I have cleaned the air filter and changed the plugs. What should I look at next?

Check for ECM damage from seat pan resting on ECM connections.

Idle Air Controller.

It may have gone bad. Sometimes you just need to take it out and clean it up. A little carb cleaner on the throttle plate probably wouldn't hurt either.

Sounds just like my 08XT when it had a bad ECM plug. Try starting the bike and wiggle the connections to the ECM. If the motor speed changes, it is more than likely the ECM connection. You will need to get a replacement ECM. My bike did not indicate any codes when the ECM was bad.

Debueller, Nobuell, The ECM does not look warn at all from the seat. The connectors look good and wiggling them makes no difference.

Rwven,

The Idle Air Controller sounds like it may be the culprit. It dosen't seem to be getting enough air when idling or low RPMs. I took it out and cleaned it, but it wasn't very dirty and looked in good shape. Is there a way to test it?

Sharkguy wrote IAC cleaning instructions. He described the test method at the end.
