08XT @26k.
The belt on the bike still looks pretty good for it having a little over 26k on it. I got a new belt and bearings in and want to do some preventative maint. I've removed the pinch bolt(the FSM only calls for it to be loosened) on the belt side of swing arm and have tried to loosen the axle. So far can't get the axle loose. Even tried the 600ft lb rated impact wrench and can't get it loose. Am I missing something? It's not reverse threaded is it?

Apply penetrating oil to the threaded side and give it a few days to sink in.
An impact driver is probably not a good idea.
I would suggest a longer lever arm instead.

Redshift,
Only the front axle is reverse threaded. Rear is normal righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. Shouldn't be difficult to remove the axle. Do as Natexlh suggests and also put penetrating oil on socket end of axle. Lever arm can be a pipe added to the socket wrench. Once you get to the point of putting things back together you should coat entire axle with Permatex anti-seize and then future axle removals will be a breeze.

You should be able to remove it with a standard 1/2 ratchet wrench and no cheater bar. I suspect someone hasn't been applying anti-seize to the axle as indicated in the shop manual.

My rear axle was very tight the first time I changed the belt.

I had the same question when I did it, I was afraid I was going to break something. I even went back and checked on the forums to make sure it wasn't reverse threaded on the rear wheel.

Finally I resorted to a 2 foot cheater bar, I'm a 300lb guy and not that fat, and I had to put everything into it, and it finally broke loose.

First time I removed my rear axle it required a LOT of torque to get it free. That was at 5800mi and the factory did the tightening before that. Since then with my coating of Permatex it comes out much nicer.

Stay away from the impacts they can do more harm then good.

At 26,000 miles I suspect Redshiftquasar's axle has been out before.....

Thanks much guys. Gonna scour the local dumpster for a two foot pipe that I can use for leverage. I've sprayed both the belt side and the caliper side of the axle with pbblaster last night and will let it site like that till I get home tonight.
