Just to make sure. On a 09 XB. The owners manual is wrong when it states engine off.
The only way to get a proper read is to check engine Idle on side stand. If I have oil showing in the lower XX range it is fine. When I turn the engine off there is no reading on the stick. This is fine as long as you show oil at idle.

Correct?

The owner's manual isn't really "wrong", it's just that most people find it much easier to get accurate, consistent readings with the engine running.

You've got it basically correct. The oil needs to be HOT (at least ~5 minutes of riding), engine idling, on the sidestand, and I always have my front wheel straight (turning it one way or the other changes the bike's lean a lot).

To get an initial read, when you change your oil and filter, put in your 2.5 quarts, warm it up and check it how ever you are going to be checking it(running or off, on side stand or not). That will tell you where your particular bike's oil level needs to be.

What Etennuly said. You can check it with engine 'off' - but has to be immediate! I used to unscrew dipstick, wipe off, switch off key - then check oil level. If you wait more than 10 sec after shutdown, you get inaccurate reading.
