I checked the rear bearing (black seal) again after pulling the rear wheel to replace the tire. They are hard to turn but smooth. They were that way last time I checked so last time I pulled the seals and added some grease. I'm getting ready for a long road trip with my daughter and I don’t want to break down on the road if avoidable. Should I change them out prior to going? I figure I should at least have a set with me. Do they cross reference with something I can get locally? |

I think the general consensus is that this isn't usually a problem. Reinstall the wheel, torque the axle properly, give it a a spin, and if it feels OK you should be good to go. Yes, these are standard off-the-shelf industrial ball bearings which means you should be able to find them at a commercial bearing supply house. The standard bearing number is 6006-2RS - 30 x 55 x 13 (dimensions in millimeters). They are common to a whole bunch of ATV's, which should make them easy to find even in BFE. I printed Hugh's list and stuck it in the tool kit under the seat, (next to a spare set of bearings). I don't plan to do a roadside bearing swap but being armed with knowledge during my stay over in BFE should help. Hopefully, by then, I've found someone with a more appropriate place to shop swap bearings than out there with Henry David Thoreau in the wildflowers and could get a cross referenced set from the list if I needed them. |
