A few days ago I was riding my 06 Uly and it suddenly killed. I thought maybe I had hit the kill switch but that was not the case. When I turned the switch off and on again I could not hear the fuel pump as I normally can. It would turn over but not start. I took it out to my local shop and it started for them and has several times. They have road it and it has not happened again. Any ideas of what it could have been? Is something going out? I don't want to be in the middle of no where (easy to do in SD) and have it quit on me.

Have they done the BAS recall yet on your bike? It's the Bank Angle Sensor. They had a recall on them, if your's was not done, could be the problem.

Be sure to check the ecm to make sure its not hitting the seat pan

I can tell you what caused that on my 07. I cannot state that it is the same problem. On my 07 it was a cracked ECM. I finally figured what was causing it by removing the seat, turning the key and the kill switch on, and flexing the couplings going into the ECM. That would start the fuel pump. Worth a shot, anyway.

I'm still futzing with my 06 which has a low seat on it and am currently waiting on an ET sensor.
I CAN get the bike to screw up if I wiggle the connector blocks to the ECM.
Did they redo the mounting position for the later models?
Would operating temperature have anything to do with the ECM cutting out? I don't see why it would.
If the sensor doesn't do it I WILL have to get the trouble codes read.

Congrats. You have a winner. Replace ECM, get spacer blocks to prevent the seat rubbing or relocate the ECM.

Empirical observation from the busted ECM test center:

When the bike is cold, it takes more wiggle of the bad ECM to make it shut off (or make the fuel pump re-cycle if all I have is the ignition on but not started), unless your ECM connector(s) is really REALLY shot.

When it is warm/hot, it takes a gnat fart to make that same ECM connector wiggle and interrupt everything.

OP's problem could still be the BAS. I had one fail early on, they replaced it. Later the idea came out to move the BAS, I had it done. Shortly thereafter the BAS that they moved failed. With the new on in the back that has never been mounted in the original position, there has not been a failure. That is roughly 40,000 more miles.


When they failed they would randomly cut off the engine. Shut off the key switch then turn it back on and it would fire right up like nothing was wrong, cycling the kill switch could work also.

If it's the ECM I'll be really ticked as I'm just riding the bike on the street, not jumping up and down on the seat and am not built like a sumo wrestler, either.
To have the factory screw up the under seat clearance to such an extent that it destroys expensive electrical components is, well, not their shining moment, let's put it that way.

Did you have the spacer blocks installed? It is virtually a non existent problem if you are running the original seat, most of the time the issue is due to the lower seats. They came out with the spacer blocks to prevent it from happening.

I got that seat the second that they came out and do not recall if there were any spacer block included or not as it's been so long.
Were they part of the first batch of these seats?
The seat pan is deformed and there is a small, rubbed-through section right above the connector.
I just checked - no ECM Block.

Sounds like a broken ECM connection for sure then. Sorry but a good time to upgrade to an Erik Buell Racing race ecm. Someone may have an extra block too.

I'll keep you posted.
This bike is really getting me down - the past 20,000 miles have been fraught with difficulty due to problems which are hardly unique to me - throttle body shaft, rear wheel bearings and now a seat which trashes the ECM.
Rear head gasket looks like it's got some bladder control issues as well and we all know how well the coating on the race cannister holds up.
Getting this bike to last 100,000 miles is not going to be easy.
