So my first belt broke just around 7000 miles in May of 2010. Unfortunately, it was at the start of an IBA certificate ride from northernmost Minnesota to Key West. I didn't have a spare (backorder issues) and the broken belt ruined my trip. It should be noted that when it broke, I'd just done about 50 miles of gravel, and had ridden for 300 miles in 30 degree weather with heavy snow falling. Either of those might have contributed to the break. FForward to today. Just got back from a 600 mile trip, and the bike has just over 15,000 on it now. I DO have a spare belt, and now the second belt has more miles on it than the original '08 belt did. There's no evidence of cracking or a lot of stretching. The belt looks good. Should I swap it out with my new one and keep the old as a spare, just to be safe, or should I just wait until this one breaks? It's so widely varied as to how long they last (5000 to 40,000 miles it seems). Any thoughts? |

I would keep checking the belt tensioner pulley. If you can turn it by hand with the belt on it has become time to keep a spare handy. That is when mine became the "roadside" spare. When I do my oil changes it is just normal to go over the rest of the bike to check this with nearly everything else. I have seen a major difference in rider style, choices and technique. That all leads up to how long the belt lasts. Occasionally there is a bad belt thrown in the mix. |

I change mine at 10'000 miles and save the used one for a spare. It is easier to put a used one on on the side of the road. I plan on getting a new one every 10K miles. |
