I changed plugs after this first happened, and it ran well for a couple of hundred miles. After about an hour of running in 90 deg. weather, it started happening again. It happens after throttling down and starting to accelerate again. From the other posts here, I'm guessing fuel filter or voltage regulator/connector issues? Any ideas very much appreciated!

Is your fan running when it happens?

It was today. The fan didn't come on for the first half of the ride, and there were no problems. Thinking back, this is probably the longest it's run at one time since changing the plugs, so that may account for the miles of no-problem short runs before now. I had it happen right off the end of the driveway the last time, but that was after a start and immediate shutdown, so I assumed I had just fowled a plug and changed them. Both looked OK though.

How short are your short runs?

Did you change plugs, or plugs and wires?

Is your muffler valve working properly?

When's the last time you did a TPS reset and AFV reset?

The bike gets used for my work commute, which is about 8 miles, and other trips that range from 10-60 miles, usually. I only changed the plugs, and they looked OK (light tan and no crud or bridging. The muffler valve is OK. The TPS/AFV were reset less than 1K miles ago.

8 miles is evil. 30 minute rule - it applies not only to fluid condensation (betcha your primary looks like a milkshake!) but also to plugs and fouling.

Check the plugs again.

Change the wires.

And...RIDE FURTHER. Seriously. 8 miles at a time is BAD FOR THE BIKE.

I'm almost positive this is the same reason my plugs fouled, causing the same symptoms. My commute is also about 8 miles. I've started going out of my way more to work and home, and going for a ride over lunch (way more fun than eating!)

Another thing about the plugs. It is easy to knock off the other end of the plug wire from the coil. It is also easy to crack the glass part of the plug when installing them, that will cause a missfire with any load.

Thanks for the input--will replace wires and check connection at the coil. I am wondering if the intermittent nature of this is due to a poor connection there that is affected by heat/vibration.
