Today I rode about 200 miles. Several things occurred on the ride. 1. 20 miles into the ride skip spark mode while climbing Glendale Freeway to Angeles CrestHighway. 2. at about 60 miles into the ride (continuous), the engine acted like it was missing or had a big flat spot in the throttling (roll on)from 3000 rpm steady cruise. No engine light, like when skip spark happens. 3. at about 130 miles in, check engine light came on and stayed on. This afternoon I checked the DTC (ecm spy) and found 3. First one for the O2 sensor, one event. Second was dtc 53 one event. Third dtc was for the interactive exhaust, two events The service manual said ecm failure. All DTCs clear and the bike runs fine. Bike ran fine during all Engine light "ON" events too... Any ideas just what the internal ecm failure might mean? |

It means your fat ass broke the ECM. Check for rub marks from the seat making contact. Time for a race ECM |

Thanks froggy. I didn't know 170lbs was a fat ass... kind of like Obama definition of rich, I guess. The ECM has thrown this code before, about a year ago. I was wondering how the "internal failure" is classified. |

Anyone into three digits of weight is a fat ass to Froggy! He weighs in at 62 pounds in full gear in a rain storm. He is notorious for getting extreme gas mileage by turning his edge to the wind, it works for him because he is no thicker than a cardboard cutout of himself. |

When mine failed last summer it was giving me all kinds of grief, when it warmed up a simple touch on the front plug would shut it down. Hoping for the best I cleaned up all the grounds again, but after talking with Al at American Sport Bike I was convinced there was a broken trace in the ECM. Lucky for me he had a near-new '07 takeoff ECM that he sold me for a great price. That '07 changed a lot of stuff with my '06. No more S/S, no more ping, no low speed jerkiness. Should have failed years ago... |

By front plug, can I assume you are speaking of the front coupler/connector on the ECM? I have an '05 ECM I bought from Al about 4 years ago. Trying to fix the 3k rpm surge I was having... I'm going to pop that one in and give it a try. |

Fickle Uly. Today the Uly chose to run to near perfection, up the coast to the Rock Store. The fan only ran after the engine was turned off. No skip spark. No phantom hesitation. Only thing different: cleared the codes, unbolted the ECU and let it rest on top of the battery, on some thick rubber. Maybe the frog-man is right... |
