2008 xb12x with 26 k on the clock. I went out and got a new battery last week( deka etx14 ) cause my orig battery was having to get charged every morning before work since I had gotten it running again. I thought it was time for a new battery since the bike was on blocks for about 8 months while I procrastinated on finishing up the rocker cover gasket job(mentioning this just incase I might of buggered up something while the engine was rotated).
It's been about a week since I got the new battery and it's having some problems cranking over the engine. When I first put it in, the battery spun my engine to life in a second flat. Now it's hesitating and starting to feel like it's gonna die on me. Went to the local radio shack to pick up a multimeter to start checking the voltage across the terminals but got carried away with other family obligations. Well, I finally put the kids to bed and pulled out the multimeter and slapped in the nine volt and th friggen thing is dead(should of known, friggen box looked like it was opened and already had a Duracel in it). AnywAys, too late tonight to get another multimeter and just wondering what else I should check other than voltage across the terminals while running/off. Do the 08's have stator problems? Voltage regulator issues?

Woke up this morning, unplugged the charger and tried to start it up and the starter just kept spinning. I'm wondering if what seemed like a drained battery were just signs of a failing starter. Well, I tried tapping the solenoid, starter but had no effect. Resorted to pop starting it, rode it down the street then back into the driveway. Gonna see if I can source a starter now.

Here are a few charging system checks. Always start the tests with a fully charged battery.

Charged battery voltage should be about 13.2v
At idle, battery voltage should check to about 14.2. Rev up to 3k rpm, battery should rise to about 14.5 to 15, then stop.

The actual top number is not so important as that the voltage rise stops at some point, regardless of rpm. If voltage climbs with rpm and does not seem to top off, stop before you get much past 16v. Voltage that climbs too high indicates a problem with the regulator. Voltage that does not climb could be a VR issue, so long as the stator checks OK. This test confirms your voltage regulator.

To check the stator on an '08 or later, disconnect the stator connector that is underneath the left side air scoop. The stator connector is the grey/black connector. Check for AC voltage across the two sockets on the grey side of the connector. At idle, ACV should be 25 - 30. At 3k rpm, voltage should have risen to 60 - 65. With the engine off, check for a short to ground from the sockets. This test confirms the stator.
