I've been running a vented-to-atmosphere breather for about a year now, I recently finally got around to installing a catch can. I can not believe the amount of crap that used get burned in the motor. See this video and pictures, this is after 4 rides, about 30 miles!
One thing I found odd, is that mine didn't have any spooge in it until I got around 10k miles on the bike. Before that, it was always perfectly clear water with a slight chemical smell to it.
I literally never rode mine before doing this mod. It had 7 miles on it from the factory before I hauled it home in the back of an S-15 and promptly rerouted the breathers
Everything in the airbox has been spotless every time I open it to do routine maintenance.
I dunno- it gets that much no matter how much I ride or how far. Doesn't bother me at all, I'm just glad to not be burning it anymore!
as far as the holes in the baseplate: I have no pics, but I simply took an extra section of the hose and looped through both holes, effectively plugging them.
Teeps, Have those zip ties actually held up without melting because they actually seem to be a nice looking solution. If they melt then I'd just wire like a spiral bound note book.
I ran mine to the front of the can on my old 06 bike with no problems. It was just a little messy on the can.
I have just run the breathers, on my 2010 bike, to the plus side of the air box. Thats the old school way of doing it. Its no problem with a K&N/Piper type air filter as you can clean them.
After doing this I noted right away that the engine vibs less from cold, feels smoother and vibs less at idle once hot. In other words the engine does not like burning water/oil vapour. Well who would have guessed that one.
I ran mine open to the ground for almost a year. I was very much sick of the mess on the muffler and on the ground. I'm a bit pick y about my muffler tho, since I run a stainless Drummer with no chin fairing. Either way, look at all the crap in the video....after only 2 rides. That's a lot of crap to be on the bike and ground!
