So, I got off the phone with Caribou, and apparently their top rack will not mount up without some custom modification.

I was wondering if anyone here has gone ahead and done this, and if so, how did they mount their luggage rack? I was thinking I could maybe mount it directly to the Hepco Becker "top - rack extension"

They also told me that their sidecase mount for the HB racks will not fit, as our racks have that "d-ring," as opposed to two tabs. I was under the impression my XB12XP racks were standard HB racks, and that any HB cases would mount. Is this not true? Can I not just order up a set of Gobies from HB and have them bolt on?

A little confused about case compatibility at the moment.

Thanks

I had the same conversation with Caribou. I'm not sure they know that you can just switch around the Gobis and they'll fit. When I told the guy that, he said he couldn't confirm his would do the same. Then I asked him if he knew anyone with a Uly that could come into their shop in CO, he said no. And of course I can't find anyone that stocks the Caribous, or any others, to verify myself without buying them first, shipping them, and then hoping they'd take them back. I think other HB products will fit on our bikes(very interested in the Explorer panniers) but without a Uly rider to confirm their fitment, we're sort of at a stand still. I'm just glad someone did confirm the KTM Gobis fit our bikes. However I'm not 100% sure the regular size Gobis will. Someone needs to start a list of confirmed side bags that will fit our OEM side racks. Who's with me?!

I am with you Uly_dude. I would like to know what bags would fit our OEM racks as well. I have just been sticking with the OEM Journey's for now because I did not want to hassle with finding out I need to modify my racks or install new racks. Keeping the original racks and buying different bags would be cheaper and easier.

Did this but not a HB, so it is probably of no use to you...

Dave, are those ceramic coated headers? Post some pics in the ceramic coated headers thread, if you have a sec. I'd like to see them on the 'older' pre-08 style engine.

Yes they are - how's this? In two years there is almost no change in them - good stuff IMHO

That's a nice setup you got there Nipsy, except I want to keep my triple tail and grab bars. The big question here is, who stocks all these side cases(HB and Caribou) so someone can drive their Uly OEM side racks over there and find out what will snap in without any modifications. hmmmmmmmm

So I called Adventure Moto Stuff yesterday (http://www.amotostuff.com/) to try to get an answer once and for all on our HB racks and their compatibility.

These guys are one of two importers into the US of the HB line, so I figured if anyone knows, they should know.

He asked me to email off some pictures of my racks (XB12XP, latch in rear) so he could take a look and be positive about what I was explaining.

This was late last night, so I'm still waiting to hear back... but we should have an answer soon, hopefully.

Ok, cool... so I learned some things.

First and foremost, keep in mind I have the XB12XP racks, so although I would assume that these mounting options would work for you guys with the regular HB Buell rack (mount point in front) by reversing the case, I cannot COMPLETELY confirm that.

So, I spoked with Chad at Adventure Moto, and he put me in touch with the "Export Sales Manager" overseas at HB, who was able to answer some questions for me.

The only HB SIDE cases that will NOT mount to our racks are the Aluminum Cases. Both the standard and Exclusiv. They will not work with our "d-ring" latch.

The Juniors, Journeys, Gobi's and Xplorers will all mount just fine (although might need to have the turn signals slightly relocated.. I'm assuming that the relocation kit part for the XP racks is sufficient.)

ANY of their topcases will mount without a problem.
Their Rear Rack Enlargement will also mount up.

So hopefully that clarifies what HB options we have.

As far as the Caribou Pelican, here is what I now plan on doing....

I'm going to order up the Rear Rack Enlargment and the Caribou 36L Universal Topcase. I'm then hoping to find a way to bolt the Caribou mounting plate to the HB Enlargment plate. Just hoping it provides enough support.

Keep in mind that the bags mounting up to your racks and being to use all functions of the bike are 2 different things. For example, I remember seeing a picture of the XP bags on XT racks and someone saying that they did not provide clearance for a passenger to the pegs.

I could be remembering that incorrectly, but the point is this: make sure they not only mount up, but also that they don't impair functionality!

Right.. This is something I should have a addressed as well.
From my past research, and what I've learned now, here's what I know on this situation.

Mounting any of these cases to the original racks will place the cases (aside from the Buell Journeys of course) close to the passenger footpeg, and perhaps make them unusable.

The advantage of the XP racks, is that the cases are moved further back (hence requiring the relocation kit for the rear signals), allowing proper clearance for the passenger footpegs with the mounting of any HB branded luggage. These XP racks are of the original HB design... whereas the X racks are "Backwards"

Thanks for getting to the bottom of some of these questions Jconly. Now we just need someone in CO to ride over to the caribou guys and find out if those 40 liter side bags fit on a Uly! I'm just sayin.
To Andy's point, my signals are tucked under, out of harms way, but the passenger pegs are the wild card here. Though what I've heard from others is the only time interference from the passenger pegs occurs is when you try to fold them up and out of use(makes sense if you think about it). I could live with that(having the pegs down all the time) I think.

One more bit of information. If you go with the Gobi bags (I have a set and love them), you won't be able to raise your rear passenger pegs, the Gobi bags get in the way. I suppose if you used one of the passenger peg lowering kits, that might work, but I've simply not bothered with it.
