A couple of us Buell owners got together the other day for a photo shoot. My buddy Carlos Garcia was on his '06 Firebolt and took the photos, Andy Nelson was on his '06 Uly and his wife Sam rode her XB9S. We shot down by the old Pillsbury mill in North East Minneapolis. The crumbling ruins were accentuated by a storm passing through that contributed an turbulent sky and puddles.
My Uly has been reborn over the winter and I wanted to share some photos of the project. As some of you know, I wrecked by Uly and broke my neck on the way to Homecoming last year. The damage to the bike wasn't all that bad, but bad enough to justify a complete repainting of the bike. I decided to go with the "truck bed liner" look that a couple other Badwebbers have done. I used the Grizzly Grip brand of do-it-yourself roll-on which was cheap, easy and looks great! I had the stock muffler and exhaust headers ceramic coated and the primary cover, rims and frame rails powder coated flat, textured black. I had a couple tidy tails made for this project and had them also powder coated. For the final touch, I spray painted Pegasus inspired stencils to give it a sort of military look.

Nice rides! Man, you flatlanders keep those clean. I think the Pillsbury mill was still running when I left town about 16 years ago. But I'm kind of an antique ruin myself. Age kills.

Time flies so fast, I'm not sure when the mill closed down. About 15 years ago, my wife worked at Cunningham Architects in St Anthony Main and I'd see trains going in and out of the mill back then. I think it may have finally shut down not that long ago.

Metal,
I really like the looks of that decal on that top ULY photo. You get that from Erik Buell Racing?

I got the color idea for my stencil from Erik Buell Racing logo, but I created the image just minor tweaks to the old HD era logo. I printed the image onto card stock and cut it out with an exacto. Then glued it temporarily to the bike and spray painted it. My aim was to make it look like a WWII era army stencil. I guess I had way too many model tanks and airplanes as a kid!

Cool shots Dude. There is a sharp juxtaposition between the Pillsbury mills lack of preservation and the meticulously maintained look of the Buells.

Thankfully the Mill will eventually be restored to preserve its rich history for future generations.

Anyone interested in reading about the national historic site should check out the wiki.

Jeez guys, thanks for the invite!
We could have had the full spectrum of tubers and fuel framers.

The A mill is a cool site. I've spent a fair amount of time in there. Used to work right across the street (now condos) at the Pillsbury (Diageo/Grand Metropolitan) data center.
Up until the mill was sold to ADM, it was the oldest operating mill in the country. They are going to turn it into condos now.

The place you took the picture is between the mill and the storage silos / machine shop. There used to be train tracks there where they would load and unload grain cars. The old switcher engine was a real relic. I wonder what ever happened to it. I was amazed it even ran let alone pushed around fully loaded hopper cars.

Brad, thanks for the background info. Urban archeology is a hoot. It's always fun to try to figure out what a structure was used for when you can only see a portion of its remains. We need you and your neighbor at the next photo shoot to complete the picture!

sorry Brad! It wasn't my party to invite to...

I have some ideas tho- Mavericks wants to do some bike nights. Let's plan a little river ride, photo shoot, and end for some apps at Mavericks sometime soon! I bet we could get a BUNCH of Buells for that!

Yeah Dave, that bike has gone through a LOT! But it's running so sweet now, I'm suffering from perma-grin! I also did the breather re-route during the "resurrection" and that has worked out really well.
