Well that sums it up. Turned the key on and fired the bike up no problem, GF had to take the dog inside (he hates the bike), so I shut it down so she could get his attention. 10 seconds later I cycled the ignition back on and the dash went dead, and there is no power to anything. I checked the fuses, didn't look at all of them cause I was in a hurry, but the obvious ones, key, ignition, battery, etc. were fine... I literally JUST made the first payment on the bike, what is this a test?

Anyone know what it could be?

Year of bike? Age of battery? It doesn't take much of a loose/dirty connection on the ground to screw things up.

Probably the dog's fault.

Time to pull the airbox and start chasing wires.

Loose grounds will not very likely cause smoke to come out. Something shorted hot to ground. Check the wire loom where it jumps from frame to forks, left hand side. Check all the wires under the airbox. You may have to disassemble the loom...but the stench will stick around so you can finger-wipe sections of loom and then smell your finger. Burnt copper and rubber is...distinctive. Should help you narrow it down.

Alright, thanks guys. That was kinda my next step, but honestly, with me owning it for about a month, I was really hoping to make the dealer fix it. I think I might at least find the problem, since god knows how long it will take them to figure it out.

I think its a hot wire as well, the battery is 3 months old (still has the sticker on it), and its a June 06 bike. I just can't remember any wiring besides the muffler servo under the airbox cover, but alas, it came right out of the ram air vent in the front...

I blame the dog too... lol

There's a whole huge wire loom under the left side frame spar, above/behind the scoop. And a couple little items...like the ignition coil and plug wires.

Take off the outer airbox lid.

Take off the inner airbox lid (the one with the servo attached).

Take off the filter itself.

Take off the filter baseplate, including the rubber stack that fits on the throttle body.

Now...you're looking straight down at the top of your rockerboxes. And your frame. And...your wiring.

Grab a beverage, a test light, and a comfy stool : ) If you need a wiring diagram let me know, I may have a .pdf around here somewhere...

Check all of the fuses in the fuse block ..... it happened to me.....one popped and the bike would not run. replaced it and the bike has been fine for 10K

With the sizable quantity of wiring problems that my '06 has shown me since new, the only one that did that was the day the fan finally died.

My fan had been on the endangered list for thousands of miles as it made a perpetual electric motor death rattle. The day it died I was 600 miles from home in the heat of summer. The first time it came on that morning I was stopped. Smoke from an electrical smelling fire, of a gray/white color, rose from the back of the airbox seat area to engulf me. I thought I was going to go out in a blaze of glory!

It was the end of the fan motor and it's fuse.

Follow the Ratbuell's map looking for anything melted together, burned bare, or sooty. If you got smoke, usually you will have evidence.

Well after an hour of chasing wires, I found the problem... It wasn't a wire at all... And I have no idea where the smoke came from (it was there, trust me, I wasn't drinking so it had to be there).

Turned out to be the key relay in the fuse block. I jiggled the block with the key on and the ignition on, and suddenly the fuel pump kicked on, then off again. Started swapping relay's, and sure enough, put the AUX relay into the key relay position and it fired right up.

All the relays are interchangeable, so I picked up another as a spare to keep with my while I'm riding. I know its rare that they pop, but mine did, so its worth the money to keep a spare IMO.
