Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it, Froggy. I have changed oils a number of times now but because it isn't frequently I forget little things. A quick review of your piece always helps. Thanks. Much appreciated.

Froggy posted it in early 2009. I printed it out to have it handy for a reference. A re-posting might be in order, Froggy!

A re-post is a great idea. The XT is just about ready for an oil change.

A little tip when changing oil. Get a piece of aluminum foil and shape one end over the exhaust outlet under the swing arm drain and the other end pointed at the drain pain. Kind of makes a half funnel and makes clean up a bit easier. You can do the same thing under the filter.

That Oil temperature dipstick sure looks familiar.

+1 on the aluminum foil. I put one behind the oil filter as well.

I let the drippings burn off with engine and exhaust heat like a turkey cooking in the oven.

Like the write up on changing engine oil.
I searched for the write up on changing the tranny oil, but couldn't find it. I know, big surprise. Anybody want to post a link to it?

Is there a write-up on fork oil while you're at it? I'm about 800 miles away from fun time.

Good luck finding my trans fluid guide. : )

Oh, I don't recommend my fork oil replacement method. The way I do it is:
  • Ride the bike for 40,000 miles. (Skip the 10k, 20k, and 30k services)
  • Aquire fork oil and tools from American Sport Bike
  • Set aside a weekend to take apart the forks and do the change
  • On the Friday before that weekend, hit a stopped car while doing 50mph+. It will surely drain your fork oil.
  • Install race takeoff 1125R forks
  • Enjoy your fresh oil

I'm planning to wimp out on the fork oil change, ride until, oh, 20,000 - 25,000 miles, and then have a qualified tech do the forks AND the first spark plug change. I 'might' venture into a spark plug change on my own but only time will tell. I don't think I'll try your fork oil method, Froggy!

Neither are all that bad... suppose we need to get some more tutorials posted.

The spark plugs are easy to change, getting the damn wire off and back on is the PIA. Rear rocker box is leaking oil on mine, probably means having to rotate the engine. I'd say this is the ideal time to change plugs.
