does your low fuel warning light, lite up when you turn on the bike and the inst. cluster does its quick test? I was putting gas in the other day and it took 4 gallons. I thought later, boy that should've made the warning light lite up, right? Or no? At the time I didn't think to look for the odo countdown meter. So now I'm wondering if that light is out and how do you know without taking everything apart. I don't want to find out the hard way...... | ||

Once the light comes on you have about 20 miles or so on reserve. If your worried but a gas bottle and run the bike to test the reserve thing. | ||

The most I've ever needed to fill mine was 4.1, and it took riding 28 miles with the light on to need that much. Most of my fillups are within 10 miles of seeing the light, and it takes around 3.5. If you were able to put 4 gallons in, the light should have been on already. If my light ever goes out, I'm gonna be hitching a ride. I don't even think about stopping before it's on. | ||

Ok so do it old school. Which is to use the odometer and the miles you are doing and fill up as needed. | ||

Trip 1 gets reset at every fuel stop. Trip 2 gets reset at every oil change.  I am curious to know if the FI on these newer bikes throws as big a fit as the older ones do when running out of fuel. I ran out of fuel on my X1 once due to the light being out, and had to reset AFV before it would act right again. (mixture leaned out when the pump started sucking air and caused the AFV to max at 150) | ||

Problem is that your fuel range can vary from 130-260 miles a tank depending on riding conditions. You would have to assume the worst and fill up before 100 miles. It does sound like your gas light isn't coming on, which most likely is an issue with the fuel level sensor. The light on the dash is an LED and isn't likely to burn out. | ||

Pk, no the bike should not do that. I've seen one older XB bike do that when low on gas, I believe it is a fuel pump issue. | ||

Maybe you have less gas stations to hand than I do. In any event it sounds like trusting tech stuff and, for me, that can be a mistake. LEDs are great. (Message edited by uly_man on May 17, 2011) | ||

It's good to know it's an LED, though I was inside the instrument cluster this winter installing a volt/meter LED. Wonder if I could've knocked something loose. I think I will keep a close eye on it. If the fuel odo resets on me, but no light, I'll know it's a bulb issue. If the thing goes dry with no light nor any fuel odo reset, I'll know it's a sensor. Makes sense? If it is a sensor, where is that located? I don't have my manual with me here at work, so thought I would ask. Thanks. | ||

The sensor is part of the fuel pump. I doubt you knocked something "loose" on the cluster...it's an SMD chip LED soldered directly to the board, and doesn't stick up any further than its solder joints. If you did something to knock that loose...you'd have other issues that you'd have known about immediately  | ||

'06's had fuel pump issues, mine crapped out just before warranty ran out. Wiring issues in there will mess with the low fuel light, if not failing altogether. | ||

No, the low fuel lite does not come on when you turn the key on. | ||
