hi guys, i just bought myself a new sat nav as i am doing a Euro tour later this summer. its a Garmin Zumo 220 - which come with a cigarette lighter power supply but also a cable to hard-wire it to a powersource on the bike. Now my question: Where is the best place to wire it in? back of 12V power socket on dash? straight to the battery? or anywhere else? has anyone got a similar setup? looking forward to your thoughts. PS: my old Quest is up for sale on ebay: Item number: 110686185327 if you are interested...not sure how much use this is for you in the U.S. thx Lars | ||

I ran it to the back of the 12v power socket, that way it is switched and the socket is still free. I followed the socket wire to the plug, removed the pin from the plug, stripped the wire about an inch from the pin, wrapped and soldered the Zumo lead and slipped heatshrink over the splice, put the pin back in the plug and away I went. | ||

You can go a bunch of ways. Straight to the battery, I don't like this because if you forget to turn off the gps it keeps draining the battery. I like Cpeg's power socket mod, simple and makes it switched. I may be less likely to run anything high current through that socket though, for fear of overloading the wiring. I found a "how to" up at canyonchasers some years back on a cheap switched distribution block mod that I have on both of my Uly and my Guzzi. I did the same thing as Cpeg. I have had it this way for a little over a year and no issue's with the wiring. As Calamari said, if you straight wire it to the battery and forget to turn it off, it can run the battery down. But that could take a few days I imagine. | ||

update: i have started by finding a good location for the Zumo 220. having got a different screen with a palmer bracket i thought i mount it there...  here is a close-up of the RAM mounts.  its not yet wired in but i will take the power off from the 12V socket, but that will have to wait for another day... so for now its running on battery....but the screen is easily within my field of vision and i can see all instruments etc...  i will update again once i have taken it for a test ride and its all wired in... thx Lars | ||

That is a convenient place to mount it and I like how you have it placed. I would be concerned that it would vibrate a good bit out on the road though. Let us know how it does at speed. | ||

I went off the bars with my 550 and wired straight to the battery. I really don't worry about forgetting to turn it off. It doesn't draw much. if stopped for the night it usually comes off and goes with me in the tent or room. Wiring directly to the battery allows the unit to be left on during gas stops and breaks and not having to wait for it to acquire every time you stop. I have no vibe problems having it mounted to the bars and it doesn't block any of the instruments. |
