On January 20th I posted that I was anticipating a ride from Denver to Phoenix through the Four Corners area. Well I did the ride, Left Wednesday morning at 630 AM. I decided to avoid the snows of mountains that fell that night. However, Once I rode south of Castle Rock, I ended up on a solid slab of ice on the road. I decided to get off I-25 and wait until the morning sun melted the ice. After waiting an hour I rode through Colorado Springs and on to Walsenburg, Colorado. Then I headed west on Hwy 160. The roads in Southern Colorado were free of snow and ice, so the uly ate up the miles. I rode through Cortez and headed through the canyon of the ancients. I pulled into Monument Valley and after paying $15.00 for a entrance fee and a camping permit i set up for the night. The following day (Thursday) I rode to Phoenix and parked the bike to attend a number of meetings. Sunday Morning (May 1), I was checking out the weather and decided to ride through Payson, Arizona, then onto Holbrook. I would have to play it be ear, looking at the weather, that would determine my route home. The snow storm decided my route, so I decided to slab it on I-40 to I-25 to Denver. But the weather had plans for me and I ended up riding through about 50 miles of a high desert blizzard just west of Albuquerque, heading north on I-25 was cold but dry, until I got to Las Vegas, New Mexico. I decided to pull off the road for the night and checked into a cheap motel. On Monday, may 2nd I rode through "Snow Showers" all the way to Denver. Overall, the Buell performed flawlessly. The new tires (Trails) had plenty of grip in the dirt, asphalt and the slushy snow. |

Without pictures, this is all just made up stuff, conjecture of the highest order, if you will. In light of recent world events, photographic evidence is in order (that and I just really like seeing pictures of people outside of Florida riding to places outside of Florida). |

The Thunderbird Motel, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. And yes that is a cow wandering through the parking lot. Note the trees covered with snow. The trip from Grants NM to Denver was fricken Cold! |

Thanks for all the great comments, Yes the uly does better in cooler temperatures. But I would rather ride when the temperature is a bit warmer as opposed to near or below freezing. I think heated gloves will be on the wish list for next christmas!!! |

What! You paid to camp. Obviously I'm going to have to teach you the art of commando camping on the way to Alaska. Glad to see the Uly is doing so well. FYI for everyone else, Terrafirma and myself are taking 3 week vacation to Alaska via Uly's, dirt roads and fishing poles. You can count on me taking lots of pictures. |

Yes, I paid to Camp. It was my first time to Monument Valley and I wanted to camp within a photo shot of those two iconic monoliths. The campground was perfect, level and very QUIET! Unlike when you are around!! LOL! |

Well folks the Alaska trip will be on hold until next year. Mtuly, riding back from Ft. Benton, Montana, hit some loose gravel on his 1125R. He and the bike went down when he momentarily took his eyes off the road. ATGATT saved him, except for his collar bone which apparently broke in two places. Since he is a wildland fire boss, our only window was mid-June until the first of July. So that trip is scrubbed until next year. According to him, his 1125R handled the wreck pretty good so he will be able to fix her back up. |

Years ago, two engineering college buddies and I drove to Canada in a 1950s Willy Wagoneer. We'd pull into paid camping areas when it got dark and leave before everyone else woke up and never pay a dime. I had this large military mosquito netting that I'd throw over a picnic bench so it would drape to the ground. I'd spray the ground under the bench to make it bug free and then throw down the air mattress and sleeping bag and then sleep like a baby all night. Wish I could sleep that well these days. Hell of a thing to get older. |
