Picked up my "new to me" '06 Uly a month or so back and am loving it! Only problem is that I bought it without side racks or luggage. I've been watching the classifieds for side cases but alway seem to be late to the party.
I considered the cortech soft bags but think I would like the hard bags instead for when it rains and I need to lock them.
I'm leaning toward the happy trails SU rack (unless I can find a good deal on a used factory rack and bags) but read some old posts here about it not fitting quite right.
On their website it says that the rack is in it's 4th version.
Does anybody have any recent experience mounting one of these on a Uly - did it fit OK?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your absolute best bet in my opinion is to go with the actual Buell factory racks (which you can still get new).

All of the other setups I have seen just dont look as clean.

I thought about that but when I called the dealer they quoted me $121 per side for the rack. That's $242 for just the side racks and doesn't include the hardware or the piece that ties the two sides together. This wouldn't be bad but I was hoping (actually, my wife was hoping) to do this for as cheap as possible and haven't seen any cheap options for Hepco & Becker bags. With the Happy Trails SU rack I would get everything needed for about the same price and then could mount the Givi E21 bags ($170 for a pair).
At this point, I think the only way I would go with the factory racks would be if I could find a reasonable deal on one - or an insanely GREAT deal like the one you just scored!

Just curious, How much does it cost to buy your stuff directly from Hepco?
Is it possible?

Just had the same dilemma X. We went with the racks from twisted throttle and got GIVI E45's. The install was ok, except what directions were sparse and in german. Install is very similar to the factory setup to what we have on the XT. Getting ready for a week long trip, so will report back soon, but so far so good

If you can't get any here keep an eye on eBay. I picked up a set of side racks without hardware for only $20 for on my lightning long.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm not sure if you can buy stuff directly from Hepco.

I considered the Twisted Throttle rack but didn't like the fact that you have to relocate the turnsignals with it - still a possible option though - let me know how it works out on you're trip.

I'll have to keep an eye on eBay as well.

Does anybody have any experience with the Happy Trails rack?

When I bought my "new to me" 07' in February, I tried contacting HB. They told me it would void their contract with Harley to sell the racks to a consumer directly. That I had to purchase them from a dealership directly.

I ended up buying the OEM side racks and hardbags from a dealership out in MI somewhere. Got 30% discount off retail though. They were tired of having them sitting in their warehouse.

Jonny5- I have a set of Uly side case brackets (with hardware) that I recently bought.

My plan was/is to modify them to work on my TT because I didn't want to spend the money ($273) to buy the proper ones.

However, if you really want the factory brackets maybe we could work out a trade of some sort before I cut them up.

I will take the Black windscreen and standard windshield if you would split them up. Does the windshield grommets come with the shield? How much shipped to 11743? What color is the decals on the air box cover? Does it have the vent in the front?

You canNOT purchase racks directly from HB.

If you want "universal" racks, get the ones for the Outdoorsman bags. They move the bags back on the bike, and locate the latches at the back.

Do you want "cheap"...or do you want "works"?

Yes, Greg, will sell manuals, as I have 2 sets. Still enjoying my 2010 Uly X.

Yes, Michael, will sell std. shield and airbox. Will check on shipping. Airbox cover is still in box, new, will check to see if 2009 or 2010 and decals and vents tonight when open box. I bought extra plastic in case I wanted to change color, but I am fine with yellow which now matches my helmet.

how much would it be to buy the whole set of three hard cases and racks from the dealer?? Seems like it could be a little more expansive but probably the better solution in the end.

Jon, I've just installed Happy Trails SU racks & puck mounts (using Pelican 1550 cases) on my 2007. I'll update my profile pic soon.

Since they've been on for two days, I don't have much pro or con to say as yet. Installation seemed fairly simple, and I spent most of the install time using a Dremel to (carefully!) remove material from the cases so they'd sit flat against the racks. My left side rack doesn't offer as much clearance as the right, so the turn signal is in contact with the case. Most importantly, the parts were under $570 excluding shipping. (I can relate to your wife; my missus is expecting a boy next month.)

If you can find a set of the OE racks, they seem to fit (tucked in) better than the other aftermarket racks. I bolted a set of Pelican 1500's to my racks as the 1550's just seemed way too large (relative to the bike).

Seems that no matter how I resize photos on this site, they suck................

Congrats on the new baby boy David!
Thanks everyone for your input - I am actually going to pick up a set of stock Journey bags and the rack still in the box (thanks Steve!) on Friday.
Can't wait to get them on the Uly!
