Just took my rear wheel to a local machine shop and talked him into removing my dead wheel bearings and installing the new ones. After explaining the situation with rotor alignment, center spacer vs hub shoulder difference to the point where he understood the situation he said "why don't we just set them and give the axle a whack to seat and line em up?" I explained that the caliper was fixed so the bearing on that side had to be seated first and stay that way or else the rotor and caliper won't line up. He said "we're only talking about like one thousandth."

I think I'm going to need another new set of bearings soon...

One question comes to mind: WHY was it built that way???? I have never seen so many problems coming from such a simple set of parts in any other motorcycle!!!!

For any such bearing system, there HAS to be some allowance in the wheel for bearing stack differences. The correct way to install a pair of bearings is to ALWAYS install the "first" bearing, install the spacer, then install the second bearing until there is the proper clearance/interference with the spacer.

With this setup, if the spacer is a little short, bearing 2 goes in deeper. If the spacer is long, bearing 2 goes in shallow. This way, things are adjustable and can always be set correctly.

and plus as much as the caliper might be fixed, the cylinders are free to move to the right or to the left significantly thus adjusting to a rotor that might have shifted a little. I don't know how the belt would react to being slightly mis-aligned but I would assume that there is some tolerance, we are really talking about minuscule changes, no? Anyone care to explain what the deal is?
