Greetings Hooligans: Have, after much sole searching, (from the bottom of my boots) decided to sell my Uly. Am replacing with a Tiger 800XC. Debated keeping her, but need to simplify a bit & get down to 1 motorcycle. Spent way too much time maintaining 4 machines. (sold ST1300 last month - Uly & KLR next) I won't wax on all the virtues of the XC over the Uly - because frankly, its a compromise. NOTHING handles like the Uly...period. For shear riding pleasure - no beast was ever more fun (or comfortable) to ride. The XC is an attempt to blend some of the road qualities of a Uly, with some dirt capabilities of KLR. Perhaps, not quite as good at either - but should meet my needs nicely. So my 08' fully farkled, well maintained Uly is 'for sale'. Will advertise here & Craigs list soon. The BWB community has been a great bunch of folks, none better than this group! It's been Fun - y'all take care & remember... the Uly's are the future "Vincent Black shadows" - a bike everyone now covets! Chow' j |

Tell us how the 800 is when you take delivery. I'm leaning toward the 1050. |

Those tigers do look really nice and tempting. Both of them. I would like either one. The 800 does look like a great cross between a KLR and Uly. Having a KLR, I really would love to take a ride on the 800. The 800 may just be the long distance survival bike to have. But I think my next bike will be a sport touror, or god forbid maybe an HD Dyna. That said I could not give up my Uly, it really is the perfect bike for me and my current needs. Good luck, and I wish you the best in finding the right bike for you! |

Thanks for your good wishes. For all its 'faults' the Uly is still a SUPERB handling machine - no other like it. I wish I could afford to keep all 4 bikes - including Uly. But need to pare down the inventory so I can spend more time riding - less time maintaining. At the last "Tigerfest" I traded a guy his 1050 Roadie, for my 955 Girlie, for a day of riding. It's a solid machine. Has similiar ergos to Uly & 17" wheels. I'd rate it about the same in dirt road capability as Uly. Good adventure tourer. Triple motor is a proven powerplant with plenty of ponies - not as much torque as a Uly - but you really feel the HP kick in at around 5-6K rpm. Need to swap out screen - fortunately Palmer brackets / screen also available for 1050. I've bought / sold lots of bikes over the years - liked all of em' - but kept gravitating towards more adventure oriented machines. The Uly was my first (not counting KLR) Real 'do all' long distance model - Not to be anthropomorphasizing to much, but I get a bit depressed thinking about selling her - she took me on a 15,000 mi trip last year with nary a hiccup. Feels a bit disloyal to sell her, but the 'die is cast' & need to move on. I will truely miss her 'grunt' & canyon carving ways. We'll see how the 800 XC does in the long run. Anyway - good luck with your next move as well. Toodles, j |

In the end James couldn't hold on to the Vincent Black Lightning 1952. |

In the end my uncle Paul(RIP)couldnt hold onto his 1954 'C' model Black Shadow either. I fell in love with that bike when I was about 10. (1958) It was BEAUTIFUL!! |

So you will sell your Uly, keep your Girlie and add a 800 XC? Outstanding! I'm jealous! I think that everybody should have that phase in there life of owning and riding a Buell Ulysses. Had lots of regrets trading my Uly for a 955i in the beginning, but realizing more and more it was the right decision. Good for you, J. |

Hey Hunn - Glad you're enjoying the Tiger! Just got back from a fishing trip to Pyramid Lake Nevada (Got several Cutts in the 8-9 Lb range - FUN!) Took the Girlie on a 75 mi dirt detour to hook up with 395 towards Alturas. It did a very capable job of negotiating some challenging terrain. The more I ride her the more I appreciate the 955. That said - I will still miss my Uly. I'm in no hurry to sell her & keep finding reasons why "it aint ready yet" (need to change fork oil etc) Someone (eventually) is going to aquire a great machine - but wife complaining (justifiably) the garages are still 'cluttered' with motorcycles. Looks like 800 will be here end of the month - so need to get KLR ready to sell too. As ex-Buellers we need to remember we had an opportunity to own a very iconic / innovative machine - I'll always be a Uly guy at heart. If your travels get you up this way - give a shout. 360-791-7270, Chow, j |

I enjoyed every second of the thrill riding the Uly, don't get me wrong. It was just time for me to move on to something different. Did a 450 mile ride on Sunday, did OR/CA 199 west to CA 1/101 south to CA 299 east to Weaverville, from there north on CA 3 past Trinity Lake to I5 and home. So impressed with what that 955i can do. The more I ride the Girlie, the more impressed I am. That Hinckley triple is some glassy smooth engine with quiet a kick. Will be up your way in August and I definitely will give you a buzz. Hans |

John, I'm in a similar boat. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on trading my Uly for a Multistrada. I'm torn b/c I love the Uly but there is something about the Multi that I just can't get out of my head. There isn't much that I hate more about buying a new bike (or car for that matter) than buyers remorse. I've only had it a couple times and I hated it. Once was a Honda Passport and the second was my Avalanche. |

Hunn - Thats a nice route - have you done 36 in Ca ? Understand thats a pretty wild ride. On my list. I didnt get you wrong...your a Uly lover with a Girlie, like me. Yeah - that triple is hard not to like. Amazing what you can get out of a "less than liter" motor. I'll likely be here in Aug - give me a little warning so i can buy you lunch & we can whine about our lost Uly's. Sayitaintso - I think we just have to recognize sometimes were "just going to miss what we once had". At 63 - I'm learning that alot. Another hooligan migrated from a Uly to a 'Duc' last year - "Dr Greg'. I think he kept the Uly tho. If we subscribe to Hunn's thesis (and I do) - that every motorcyclist should own a Uly, at least for a little while - then we're duty bound to give ours up. They only made about 7000 X's - so we got to share - aint enuf to go around otherwise. Good luck on your dillema. Cheers, j |

Where does the "Girlie" name come from? I've heard that from a few different places now. |

I admit I don't know....but I thought that Girlie was quite appropriate after test riding one. (Just kidding) |

HA! There are (discounting the new 800 kitty) 3 Tigers in chronological order: up to 99' they were 'steamers' - 885 carbed triple - sort of industrial looking - hense the name. "Girlies" 2000 - 2006, FI 955s. They had "eyebrows" on the cowling to match the tank tiger stripes. Thus 'Girlie' look. The 07- present are 'Roadies' with 1050 triple & went to complete bike redesign & 17" front wheel. Lost all pretense of an 'off road' machine. (tho they do OK on dirt roads) I prefered the 955 because it still had 19" front wheel & more Dual sport tire options. Betweeen 6 & 9K RPM - it's like a turbo kicks in - hauls buns!! I've come to appreciate belts & final drives - don't like tiger chains & lube mess. |

Hate to see you sell, Jphish. It was good having you around. Hey, we're all different but I can't relate to you guys on this one. I plan to have my Uly until I stop riding. I love the bike. Best of luck to all sellers though. I hope you find the bike you desire. |

"Hate to see you sell, Jphish. It was good having you around." +1. We (me and the closet Buell rider, Closetbueller, liked hearing your input on stuff. Best wishes to you and please pop in on BB & D from time to time. We get where you are coming from. Maintaining multiple bikes is a lot of work, and $, that is why we are down to 3. And it is a pleasure seeing our neighbor piling the miles on our old Blast, "Buellah" and gushing about how much fun she is and the $ per week he is saving on gas. Best wishes for safe rides! Hope you post ride reports here! BeLinda and Greg. |

Thanks all - I've enjoyed being one of the BWB members...and hope I can retain membership, sans the Uly. The only motorcycle pic I have framed is one of the Uly & me on top of Sonora pass 2008. "Oh the joy" of that machine sweeping thru the curves down the back spine of the Sierras into Nevada. Nothing handles like EBs creation on twisty roads. Like poetry in motion...discounting the rider in this case. To paraphrase "forgotten, but not gone" - I will be keeping up with all you hooligans and vicarious adventures on BWB. Toodles', j |

John, I understand the need to consolidate bike ownership. Very much enjoyed stopping by and sharing a pizza with you on my trip to Seattle a coupla years ago. I've gone to the Multistrada 1200 for long rides, but am keeping the Uly as commuter and alternate bike. But you can't keep 'em all. Good luck with the next bike. --Doc |

Hey Doc! - Glad you've fully recovered from last years maladies & riding again. Rode a friends Multi a few weeks ago - can understand the attraction!! I still love the Uly - but developed more interest in unpaved wanderings these days & the 800xc will, I think, be better for intended purposes. I also finally retired for good last month - and need to pare back my M/C inventory. The 800 is my retirement present & move towards simplicity. Speaking of which, what is your professor status these days ? Anyway - NM is on my "bucket list" for future rides - will warn you if I get out your way - maybe I can pet the 'Uly'. Chow Doc |

Jphish, NM is definitely a game changing ride. Don't overlook the oft-overlooked NE corner bordering OK. If you ever wanted to feel like you're the only man on the planet....you will there. It was eerie cool for me. |

Since I'm recovering, I'm keeping my prof job for the foreseeable future. Sure would like to retire, but can't just yet. Please do let me know if you pass this way. And that goes for everybody else, too... --Doc |

John - Noticed your bike on CL, hope some lucky buyer knows what a deal that is. Know you can always swap bikes for a weekend or two when you need your Uly fix - - guess I'd suffer riding that new Tiger 800XC for a day or two. . . That's just the kind of guy that I am. . . All kidding aside, best of luck with the sale. Paul |

Hey Paul - Thanks buddy! I knew I could count on you. Funny thing...I listed Uly & KLR on Sunday nite - had 16 inquiries & 4 people scheduled to see the KLR by Monday - it sold in less than 24 hours! (at price) Havent had ONE single contact on the beautiful Uly yet !! The next Vincent Black Shadows & no nibbles ? - Go figure! Im patient - priced it to sell - not desperate either. So maybe still riding it when we meet for B'fast. Hows next sunday work for you ? PS: WABDR meeting at Fife BMW next Sat 5-9. Think I might go. j |

Jphish - good luck with the sale. There will be a bit less competition for buyers as I have taken my 09 off the market. Will be doing the WABDR ride this summer on it after the ADV WestFest/Montana 1k this July. Can't seem to bring myself to part with it. |

Itileman - Thanks for the competition reduction efforts. If I had 10 KLRs - could have sold 'em all this week - but aint exactly "lining up" for our our highly under rated Uly's. Oh well - if I've got to be 'stuck' with a machine - rather it be the Uly, than any other. No hurry - no wories. It still rides like the wind! The WABDR trail looks great - lots of interest - extends the TAT in a N/S direction. We ought to do a Buell fest 'west' this year - still appears to be a few of us left. When you get out this way - give me a hollar - I'm good for a beer (after riding of course) or lunch, or both. TTFN, j 360-754-8015 |

John - Congrats on selling the KLR. I'll shoot you an e-mail later, went to the "ADV Riders prepare for the WABDR" from that "other" website get-together on Saturday; wouldn't mind going back and getting some perspective from some of the guys that rode the route. Still thinking WABDR 7/31 to 8/5 ?? Paul |
