Went for a ride last Sat. and noticed a metal-to-metal vibration noise when I pulled up to a stop. I found the tab that bolts to the diagonal support arm next to the right Palmer foot peg had snapped off and was making contact at certain RPM's. When removing the assembly for repair I also found a crack in the tab that mounts to the oil cooler bracket. Although they're just footrests, not for standing on, I still thought some of the metal used was a bit thin and now I believe that to be true. Since I had to do some welding this gave me a chance to lower the pegs a bit as my knees would rest slightly on the frame pucks although it was still a welcomed alternative riding position. I found some 1/8" 304 plate and made some new, longer tabs while beefing up some of the other weld areas. If you have these pegs take a moment to carefully inspect them as I don't believe I am the only one to experience problems. | ||

I always thought the support structure for those pegs looked a little flimsy in the pictures I've seen. They're still on my short list of future mods. Thanks for the heads up. | ||

PK, I couldn't agree more. They looked flimsy in the photos....but I want them anyway. Ron, thanks for the heads up. As long as they are repairable it still sounds like they would be worth the money. If I was to buy a set how difficult do you think it would be to reinforce them prior to initial installation? | ||

Reinforcing is easy if you have some stainless stock & a mig or tig that welds stainless. I was considering brazing as it's plenty strong for this app. but mig's just plain fast. Hi, Ron, sorry to hear about the issues you've had. We've not had any previous reports similar to this and they have been very popular. On the original design, we used a thinner walled stainless for certain parts but went to the thicker material all round as it was cheaper to buy so made sense. We also changed fabricators last year and I think yours looks like the prior version. If you have any further trouble please let us know if we can help and thanks for the heads up. I hope this thread doesn't cause a prospective buyer from shying away from purchasing them as mine was probably an isolated incident. They add hours of saddle time as I can stretch out and that allows wife to move her legs down to my stock pegs. How much farther would Paralegalpete go with these? |
