While I was changing plugs in the XT for her 10k maintenance, I decided to put dynamat in the airbox. I like listening to the valvetrain as much as the next gearhead, but the airbox on this bike has always seemed like it amplifies the sound and directs it straight into my helmet. On top of that, I quickly grew tired of hearing every individual "gasp" of the intake strokes while riding at low rpm.

Just rode her today for the first time since getting everything put back together, and the airbox is MUCH quieter. I'm really pleased with the results.

Sorry I didn't take any pictures, but I just covered the lower plate in the airbox with the stuff everywhere outside of the filter. The mat I used was some old pretty small scrap pieces and seemed to stick well but even if a piece comes loose, there's no way for it to get past the air filter.

The stuff reflects heat pretty well too.. who knows, maybe I gained a couple HP by keeping some heat out of the airbox?

Great idea phil! I used it inside the outboard motor cowl on my sailboat and it made it sound nearly "electric"

I enjoy how we are all different : ) I take my air box cover off when it gets hot. Allows more air on and off the rear head...

Anyway, I love how loud it is. I like the honk! The low RPM noise is not as fun though. But when you open it up, it sounds mean!

i thought the air box was supposed to be rigid and stiff, so that it can help up the power/efficiency with it's harmonics at certain frequencies/air-flows

either way, make sure that stuff is pinned down so it wo'nt clog up your filter, and 'choke' the motor.

I kinda like the Dynamat idea. May do it myself shortly. I'm already going deaf from engine noise in the cars.

This is my winter machine.

It is a little noisy, for the Burbs, so I have fitted "cheese-a-burger" lining to the cockpit and bomb bay.

Yeah.. I don't think dynamat would make a noticeable difference for the B-1. They take off from the base I work on from time to time.. truly an awesome sound. As soon as they get far enough away for the thunder to die down, you realize you're surrounded by car alarms.

Some things are done better than others but the US do mad aircraft better than anyone. A B-1, in a full power climb, is just something words can not do justice to. The next best thing is a Avro Vulcan.
