Playdoh makes a great tool for checking the clearance.

Play-Doh before seat install: I chose red to match bike. Just kidding

After test ride. Note the impression in Play-Doh near seat rail:

I went old school and used a chewing gum: both delicious and useful! : D

Umm. My bike has a lug, next to the ECM, that the seat sits on. The seat never touches the ECM and caused no problems.

Uly Man, take a look at the first pic that I posted early in this thread. I think the top red arrow is pointing to the lug you are referring to? If so, my seat was definitely rubbing on the lug, which is good. But, take a look at the lower red arrow and you will see a scuff mark on the connector. The seat was also rubbing this and given enough time, it could crack the ECM, as many have had happen.

Hi Motorbike. Yes I see your point.

My bike is a 06 and both ECM plugs are in-line unlike yours. I use the low seat and have covered the underside with foil to cut heat. The lug has marked the foil but not touched the ECM blocks and I am about 280lbs as well.

Very odd but thats Buells for you.

Bumping this one up since I see others are posting similar issues. I just did this mod myself and was happy for the information before I FUBAR'd my ECM.

I have been experiencing very intermittent engine cut out for the last year (08 XT). Once in a Blue Moon the ignition would cut out under load, CEL on, tach/speedo needle sweep, etc would only last a second. Might do it two, three times over the course of a 1/4 mile stretch then weeks/months before occurring again. Mine seemed more likely to occur on humid/damp days and early in the ride, but maybe those are just the times I remembered. Checked grounds and such, but wasn't till I tripped over this thread that I examined my ECM. First look didn't notice anything except that the "lug" was definitely rubbing the seat pan. Then I saw it, the rub mark on the upper connector, very small contact patch, just the very upper portion (say 4mm).

I made a bracket out an Aluminum 90*, re-bent, Dremeled the corners/edges to save skin later and drilled some new holes. Had to reshape my bend about five times till I was satisfied. Last time was because I noticed as I was tightening the bolt it was starting to flex the ECM body, not good. Be careful here. You want to trap the left/lower end under the battery tray, just make sure your bracket ends up in the same plane. I also added a rubber flat washer between the ECM and bracket for partial isolation purposes. Used the "fuzzy" side of velcro tape for cushioning and abrasion protection on all contact points(because I have a bunch of the stuff). Calling it good for now. I can post pix if desired but it's basically the same the others here. Thanks for the ideas and fixes.
