I have heard that the 2006 Ulysses are prone to having the seat rest on the ECM causing problem and that there is a spacer to be bought. However my 2006 seems to already have it: the allen bolt closest to the engine that secures it goes through a black plastic square that I can tell rubs against the bottom of the seat. Is that it? Does anyone have a picture of what it's supposed to look? | ||

That's the spacer. I don't have a picture handy, but I believe it's about 3/8" thick x 1-1/2" long x 3/4" tall? | ||

Sound about right, I guess maybe the place where he had it serviced installed it? I also noticed that I have a LED rear light that is NOT supposed to be there on a 2006, right? Seems the people that cared for this bike at the dealer really knew what they where doing.  | ||

I don't think the spacer was ever a formal recall or anything, but IIRC some dealers installed them on 06 bikes. 07's came with the block. All Ulys came with the LED taillight. | ||

What you want to look for is where the seat is hitting the wire connector area of the ECM. Yes it will hit even with the spacer installed. This pressure is thought to crack the printed circuit board inside the ECM at the wire connector to PC board junction. | ||

I have looked thoroughly but there is no apparent contact between the saddle and the actual ECU. I guess I can try to relocate it just to be sure. That support that holds it is pretty "soft" maybe I can bend it slightly to move it further away. | ||

You can hold down the wire bundle coming out of the ECM with a cable tie to keep the seat pan from rubbing through the wires. Just look the situation over by looking for flat spots on the wires which can indicate that the seat pan or something else is trying to wear through the plastic insulation on the ECM wires. Usually it's an easy thing to move whatever is the culprit or the ECM wires out of harm's way. Worked for me and I've had no complete wear throughs because I rearranged things before it became a bike stopping problem. That being said, I would not have looked had it not been for this forum. | ||

On my 08, the block was not high enough to save the ECM, the seat pan was rubbing on the ECM wire harness connectors and cracked the joint between the ECM and one of its connectors. I added 1/4" of material to the height of the block to fix the problem and HD replaced the ECM under warranty. Edit: The material I added was plywood, and I bonded it to the spacer with "Shoe Goo". I drilled the screw access hole in the wood after curing. Before reinstalling the ECM, I also bent the metal mounting bracket ear down to tip the ECM downward about 15-20 deg. to just clear the batteery with the ECM Harness connectors, giving me the greatest clearance possible between the ECM and the seat pan. My 2008 has the same situation. I'll need to add to the spacer or something because I can see where it touches and the connectors look like they are on the way out too. | ||

It is more common on the "lower" seats - anything that's not the standard "tall" 06 seat. |
