I think this has gone bad, judging by what I have researched on this site. Is it safe to do short rides until my new part from American Sport Bike arrives? How common is this failure? My Uly is an '06 that was purchased by the p.o. in '08, who put only 1100 miles on it. I bought it in July of 2010, and it's now sitting at 3,700 sensibly ridden, wheelie-free miles (shame on me!)

Uh yep. That looks like it has some kind of failure going on!

You will not hurt anything by riding it, unless you have sensitive bone joints or a bad back. You will feel every pulse of the long stroke 1203 thumping.

People will advise you to change that wire form cable retainer for your clutch cable as soon as possible also. They tended to break leaving the cable to melt on the exhaust pipe.

I've got the original wire form and engine isolator but might need the isolator judging by how smooth my son's ULY is compared to mine.

If any of you would like the new cable retainer, I have an extra, in the bag, that I would like to trade for an old wire form.

What is it that indicates that the engine mount above is bad?

On the bottom of the mount there are two rubber washers squished together. There should be a 1/8-1/4" gap. There is also ripped rubber on the top where the isolator seems to be frozen to the bolt. This is why mine failed. The isolator bolt seized in the mount, and it self destructed. When replacing it, coat the bolt with anti-seize compound. I do this every year. Gotta keep moving parts moving. : )

Thanks for the advice. I should have the new isolator on Friday. It may have been in this condition the whole time I have been riding it!

If it has been like that, you will be experiencing a whole new world of Uly with a new one installed. Let us know.

Gunut,

Good tip. I will need to take a look at that.

Maybe I will use a little dry lube so that it doesn't attract dirt.

Thanks

Thanks Gunut. I see the upper damage where mine, so far, looks good. The bottom though is more difficult to see. I have one washer at the bottom, that looks good, but then there is a 1/4" gap, on mine, between the washer and a metal bottom piece. I don't see a second washer. What am I missing? What can I do to improve the life of this mount? I don't wheelie or go off road and I'm sure helps but what else can I do as an easy maintenance procedure, if anything? Thanks.

This may be my issue, I'm starting to feel like the motor has more vibration than usual. It's an 08 with 14k miles. I also just finished a 1300 mile round trip last weekend (4 day weekend) and for the first time ever I sometimes hear a clunk from the front end when I hit a bump after a smooth section. Could this bushing also cause an audible clunk?

Next- What is the best solution? OEM part or aftermarket?

OEM is all there is at this point.

Could this bushing failure result in an audible clunk? Not very loud but you can hear it.

Going by what I've heard, if it has completely failed there would be no mistaking the symptoms. If it's about to fail I would guess that a bump might cause the mount to bottom out on the head of the fastener. Have you checked the front end for worn steering head bearings? Thats a common cause of front end "clunks" also. It could also be something loose under your flyscreen, I know many Uly owners have had the horn contact the flyscreen.

thanks, I'll investigate tonight when I get home. I'm overdue for the 10k service, I'll check steering head bearings at that time. It is possible about the horn also, I just installed palmer windscreen brackets. Thanks for the good ideas, now I have an educated start point.

The upper bolts on the Palmer mounts have been known to contact the metal instrument housing, you may want to check that also.

I changed the front isolator last night. It was toast! The new one from American Sportbike was fresh from Barry Controls, dated 03/12/11, part number L0501.4A8 (The old one was dated L0501.02A8 dated 02/07/06) I did coat the new isolator bolt with anti-seize, but installed the mounting bolts dry. Look at the beautiful new clearance (about 9mm). I'm going to watch this mount carefully. Can't wait to ride the smoother bike. I also checked the primary chain tension, and it was fine.

My original 06' isolator still looks like that 2nd to last photo. Maybe mine is just fine or at least not completely shot yet.

Bike is MUCH smoother now at all RPM's with a new isolator, foot peg vibes and most mirror vibration went away too. I finally installed the fan shroud, and it really does help the heat situation on the highway.
Thanks!
