I finally got a chance to try out my new Erik Buell Racing ECM last night on my 08 XT. I installed it, did the TPS reset, started the bike and let it idle for 10 minutes as the instruction sheet stated. Also, I moved the stock ECM last fall to a better location and now do not have to worry at all about pressure from the seat breaking the ECM connector anymore.

I went for about a 25 mile test ride. I did not notice a huge difference in power, if any, but the bike did seem to run smoother while cruising at lower speeds in town etc. It also seems to idle a bit smoother.

What I really noticed is the fan program. It works as designed but will take a little getting used to the fact that the fan runs at any speed above 15 mph now. I really like the fact that the fan shuts off with the key now. I was getting kind of tired of explaining what that "funny noise" was whenever I rode with any non-Buellers (which is most of the time, unfortunately).

Overall, I like the new ECM so far and look forward to getting some more miles on it!

The fan thing is a service ECM re-map on the early 08 bikes and STD on the later ones.

I have to say that I do not understand the logic of having the fan run all the time above 15 mph and not at all in traffic, with an air cooled engine, and more so given the way the XB engine is located on the bike. My bike is a 15k 06 machine and the fan now only comes on when it needs to and that is not very much at all. In fact it is very close to what any other bike would be.

Maybe someone can explain the 15 mph thing to me.

I dont get it either, mines an 06 20K and comes on in the summer after less than 5-10 minutes of riding.

I wish the fan ran all the time, was bigger, and ran faster rpms.

I mentioned that the fan runs at any speed above 15 mph but I also assume it will run as needed if the sensor records too high of temperature while running slower than 15 mph? It hasn't been warm enough here for me to try that yet.

One more thing to note, I have the stock muffler and I can hear the fan running until I reach about 40 mph. After that, I assume it is still running but there is too much wind noise in my helmet to hear the fan any more. Does anyone know if the fan actually keeps running at higher speeds, say 130 mph?

Yes, it keeps running.

My E.B.R. ecm did not come with the instructions (IE: let it idle 10 minutes?). I've gotten a couple of shorter runs in (2 miles and 12 miles), and it is pretty rough running still....I hope it gets better. (yes, I reset the TPS)

Sayitaintso. A great name Dude. Summer is the point.

The fan will run (two stages) if the engine gets hot but forced air is the first, oil is the second and ignition skipping is the last resort. Its an air/oil cooled engine so in a hot place allow for that. Like a bigger oil cooler as with the newer bikes.

My new Erik Buell Racing ECM did come with an instruction sheet which explained several things briefly such as running with aftermarket pipe (no exhaust valve) etc. It also gave instructions specific to 08 and up to do the TPS reset and then start the bike and let it idle for 10 minutes, which I did. I am at work now so I cannot look at the sheet right now, sorry I cannot be more specific. I'll have to admit, that's longer than my bike has ever sat idling and if it were a hot day, I would have set up a house fan to keep it cool. The bike fan did not come on at all while idling ten minutes in cool temps last night.

The 10 minute idle thing is just to give the bike time to adjust to the IAC on 08+. It isn't really needed, but it can't hurt.

The fan will shut off below 15mph because of people complaining over the years about the noise. The fan will still come on below 15mph if the engine temperature exceeds a certain threshold.

I tried to scan the ECM instruction sheet for you reading enjoyment. I know it is barely readable but the original was blurry also.

Please read the first paragraph carefully!

Interesting. Mine threw an error code with the BAS removed- I had to go in and manually disable it. Same with the active muffler control.

I've got a couple hundred miles on it now...it really seems to have more vibration to it than it did before...just generally rougher running :-/
