"Going by the book" - Why do you have to detach clutch cable to just re-torque head bearings ? I can understand the rational IF your going to perform 'spring scale tension check' - but not just to re-torque bearings. What am I missing here ??... Other than most my common sense. I'm more curious about the 'connection', than lazy...well, almost

I don't think you have to take it off. That sounds like a left over from a harley procedure. You do have to take the handlebars off to get to the nut but that's all. Loosen the lower triple tree clamps, break the nut clamp loose and then break the nut loose and retorque to spec. A lot easier than the old Timken bearing procedure!

Thanks Tootal - Yeah - I couldnt see where clutch cable entered into the equation at all. Now just got to find my torque wrench...

The service manual lists step 1. as

1. Detach the clutch cable at handlebar and ensure that throttle cables do not bind before measuring steering head bearing resistance.

"They want a true measurement of bearing resistance not interfered with by cables"

That makes sense with setting a set of Timkens on an old Harley but Buell just uses a torque spec on their high wall bearings.

Besides - I dont have a functional "springy thing" to measure with. My old fish scale is so rusted, the last 32" salmon only weighed 7 oz. Might be a bit off.

HA! Makes it harder for the killer whales to get a decent meal - will have to switch to seals.
