On Saturday, April 2, I took my FIRST motorcycle ride since December 12!

After my November 3, 2010 crash (totaled 3-month old Ducati Multistrada) on December 12, 2010 I came down with what eventually became "hypersensitivity pneumonitis" due to "mycobacterium avium complex."

Lost 10 pounds (down to 130), terrible headaches, couldn't breathe, fatigue. Spent a week in hospital, couldn't work and basically stayed in bed all winter...honestly thought this was the end at age 63.

But NO! Started improving a month ago and took my first ride on Saturday. Second son Keith rode as wingman on my (replacement) Ducati Multistrada (visible in pic).

After a little initial uncertainty, boy did it feel good to get back on the road. And I'm gonna have the whole summer off!

Got a lotta catchin' up to do on both the Uly and the Milledue. CAN'T WAIT!!!

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought you might have. Just kidding, I have no idea what that is but I know you were really sick. I am sure glad you are OK again. Thanks for posting and may you enjoy riding for many more years Doc!

It's good to see you back . . . but. . speaking strictly as a construction worker. . I think if they'd removed the 400W Mercury Vapor Crouse-Hinds Streetlight from the right frontal lobe . . well, you'd have recovered quicker.

Well done!

Doc that is great news!

I have a suggestion though. Get yourself some plastic with metal reinforced casts made for all of your body parts. This, of course, would be for you to ride with. That way if the unmentionable happens again the plastic metal reinforced casts will already be in place in case they don't protect the the body from impact enough.

So how'd the ride go? Nothing worse than being sick and unable to do the things you love to do. Kind of like a new lease on life so go out and enjoy!!

Y'know, after we left home I felt fine on surface streets, but as soon as I entered the interstate (that pic was taken near I-40) I felt pretty hesitant about getting up to speed and merging with the traffic.

But I just rolled on the throttle, the Uly responded, and all my fears melted away. The rest of the ride (all ten miles of it) was FABULOUS!

As soon as we got back home I switched bikes and did the same ride on the Multistrada. It felt great, too...just like my other one. I love both those bikes.

Now if I can just make it through the rest of the year without any more fractures...

Every time I stop by the Duc dealer and drool all over a Multi I think about you and your ride reports.

I'm very glad to hear that you've turned the corner and your health is improving. It a good thing too because riding season is here. So build up some strength and get out there on one of those two luscious bikes you have, as often as you can. The fresh air will do you good! (But stay outta the mountains until later in the spring, we dont need any more stories about hoar frost.)

Take care

See you at "HOMECOMING" right?

Yessir! That is my plan at this point. I figure to ride back to HC2011, then turn W from there and continue the trip.

Which bike are you riding to HC2011?

Pretty much all my "recreational" riding (e.g. non-commuting) is now on the Milledue. So I'll be showing up on the Italian beauty at HC2011. Since I've "paid my dues" on the Uly I'm sure you'll cut me some slack. Plus I'll be happy to give you the straight dope on the MTS1200.

More pics of that yummy Multistrada please!

OK, here's one...

...but I'm sensitive to the fact that this is the ULY forum.

The fresh air will do you good! (But stay outta the mountains until later in the spring, we dont need any more stories about hoar frost.)

Listen to this. Two days after this initial ride I decided to take the Milledue out for a slightly longer ride (couldn't resist). I had the choice of two routes: (1) a 90-mile level, straightish loop, and (2) Sandia Crest, the local racer road...sportbike heaven (10,678 foot summit). For the new engine's sake (more speed variation) I chose Sandia Crest.

So about 50% of the way to the summit (about 9,000 feet), as I'm throwing the Milledue back and forth between a couple of hairpins, the thought occurred to me that I'm DOING EXACTLY THE SAME THING AS WHEN I CRASHED BACK IN NOVEMBER! Riding quickly on a mountain road, approaching elevations at which at this time of year there very well might be icy (frosty) patches...

...I turned around immediately and rode straight home! WHEW! I think I'll stay out of the high mountains just a little bit longer...it was fun while it lasted, but the parallel to my November crash was frightening. You'd think at my age I'd learn from experience...
