I'm leaving the world of the BadWeb, traded my Uly for an Triumph Tiger 955 this weekend. Drove 1000 miles RT for the swap, so I got a really good last ride in with the Uly and tested the Girlie on the way back. That triple is one silky smooth engine.
I wanted to thank everybody here on the Forum for the help that they gave me with my Uly, and I know that you will welcome Billy B. as the new owner of a Buell Ulysses!

Hunn, you don't have to leave here just because you sold your Buell. In fact, I would love to hear some real world reports on that Tiger. I almost bought one myself before I rode the Uly. That triple is sweet.

I am the former Girlie owner who has now joined the Uly ranks, thanks to Hans.

Good to meet you, Hans.

I have an 04 Tiger. I bought it new and now have 93,000 miles on it. I plan on turning 100,000 miles this year. But I bought an 09 Uly XT when Harley discounted them so deep. Although they might appear to serve the same purpose, they are really quite different. The Uly is more fun to ride but it's a one person bike, unless your passenger is light. The Tiger doesn't care how much weight you pack onto it. I like them both.

Any major motor work?

My Tiger has been an oil burner since new. A little more than a quart every 1000 miles. No big deal. I just check it frequently and top off. My new Buell is the same. The Tiger hasn't had any major issues. I had the stator rewound at about 30,000 miles but it;s been fine since then. The stock seat sucks. I have a corbin. I like that seat. And they're fairly cheap. I think I payed something like $275. A center stand is a must. I ride with a bunch of sport bike riders and the Tiger can hang with them in the corners but of course they run away from me at high speeds. The 04 came with spoked wheels so I sealed all the spoke nipples with high temp RTV and run tubeless now. It ran a little hot when new, but all of a sudden the heat went away and rides cool now. Ethanol is playing havoc with the vinyl gas tanks. Mine has swollen a bit but it's ok so far. Ethanol also messes with the gas level sender. I just ordered a new one. Expect about 20,000 miles out of set of Metzler Tourances, 25,000 miles from a good chain. Valve adjustments are like every 12,000 miles but my experience has been check them at 12 and 25 and forget about them after that. Triumph charges too much for parts but alot of parts can be sourced from other bikes. Buell included. Lots of people like Ulysses foot pegs on their Tiger. Tranny's been great. Power seems almost good as new. Re-sale value on a Tiger is depressing so I will just keep mine. I hope to get 200,000 out of it. I don't see why not. There are several forums dedicated to Tigers. There are Tiger rallys every year. The main rally is in Jasper Arkansas in October. Tigers are more rare than Buells.

Maybe your Triumph needed a Motoman breakin to seat the rings. Many of us ULY owners do not have to add oil between changes. Sometimes I think that these owner manual slow breakins ruin the motors from the gitgo. My ULY has run like a top without oil usage from day one.

"Triumph charges too much for parts but alot of parts can be sourced from other bikes"

Seems like I recall reading somewhere where there are crossover parts from Kawi in-line 4's that contributed to Triumph's engineering efforts on their triples. Because of this, there are engine internals that share specs and interchangeability? Again, this is all IIRC kind of stuff.

Tigers won't be more rare than Buells for long! The new 800 should really put them on the map.

The Triumph demo truck was in town a few weeks ago, and I tried out one of those Tiger 800s. That was one impressive bike. Ergos were fine for my 5'10" frame, although the bike was noticeably smaller than the Uly overall. The bike was quick as could be, though. The only thing I found a little strange and frustrating was the sci-fi kind of "whirr" sound it made, instead of the kind of ruckus I'm more used to with both my 'zuki cruiser and my Uly. I killed it at a light during the test ride, since I couldn't actually tell from the sound if I was giving it enough throttle or not.

Once I got past that part, it was a great bike. Maybe there's one in my future sometime, assuming no further Buells are forthcoming that I care about.

We'll see...

I think the info regarding the Triumphs and the Kawi's is pretty accurate. My bike before the Uly was a Concours and it's very similar in many ways to the old Trophy.
