More trouble in the making after snapping the drive belt yesterday.
Had a hard time starting my o6 Uly, 30.000 miles today,
charged the battery to 12.6, started the bike, then measured voltage on the battery at 11.7 volt, not changing even after throttling up to 3000rpm. Stator or regulator? Had my 77 connector apart 1 week ago, looked great.
How do I figure out which part of the bike did let me down now????

If you have the service manual there are three test for the stator. It must pass all three or it's toast. Do yourself a favor and don't just throw a VR on. If the stator is bad you will be buying 2 regulators! DAMHIK! If the stator test good then it's the VR.

Thanks Tootal,
have the service manual, can do the on page 7-30 described "Stator check" and "AC output check", but not the "current and voltage output test", because I don't have the load tester. What is it? Like a battery/ charging system load tester? What did you use?

Hey Hunn
I had some problems last summer didn't know if it was stator or regulator all 3 phases of stator were putting out the spec voltage so I had to assume it was the regulator,got one from American Sport Bike and trashed the 77 and just hard wired it working good now.
It seems these regulators are prone to failure.

Neither stator nor regulator!!!
Started doing the stator test and found a bad 77 connector. Replaced it with a new one that I had on hand, getting 14.4 volts at battery after startup now. I just had checked the 77 connector one week ago and used some corrosion inhibitor for electrical contacts. Perhaps a mistake on my part? Not pushing the connector tight enough together??
I'm very relieved it was not the stator or the regulator that was bad. Thanks for the help, Tootal and Luftkoph (airhead?) !!

Excuse a noob question, but does the 77 connector issue affect all model years? I seem to remember the weakness being addressed and eliminated by the factory eventually, but can't find anything to support that.

It seems somewhere in the cobwebs of my mind that they did put a different connector in there but I have no idea what year

That original 77 connector is always a suspect. It's easy to accidentally spread the female receptacles apart slightly so they don't fit tight when disconnecting or reconnecting the connector. Mine had two tiny discolored spots on the lugs but that was enough to keep it from charging the battery.

The 77 connector problem only applies to the 2006 and 2007 Ulys that used a 3-phase alternator. The 08 Uly went back to a single phase alternator and apparently changed to a different connector that doesn't have the problem.

Hugh, Glad to here that bit of news, as I have been sort of lurking sort of asking ?'s and have been worried about the state of my '77' Nice to here well, for me anyway, that my 08 was changed.

Yeah, the '08 and up have a pretty beefy connector but the system is not bullet proof. I had a VR failure at 4000 mi. Luckily it was still under warranty. If it happens again at least it's a simple fix and not too outrageous in price.

The 08 technical update bulletin says the 08-up stator and VR are the same as the Sportster except for the length of the leads on the stator. I'm sure you could adapt the Sportster part if you ever got in a bind; odds are much better a dealer would have that part in stock.
