I'm having a local place coat my stock '06 exhaust. I'm worried that the exhaust actuator in the muffler will either get gummed up or won't get coated well underneath. That area is really rusty. For those of you that have gotten your mufflers coated, is it necessary and possible to take off that cable wheel? I can't tell if the nut that holds it on has been welded on or if it has a tab that holds it in place. Before I go crazy and try to force it off, I figured I'd ask if anyone else has done this. | ||

I just had a muffler ceramic coated this week. They only coated the outside of the can and I didn't effect the valve at all. No sticking what so ever. I even left the spring in place. | ||

Yeah I don't think they will coat the inside of the muffler. When I got the header and muffler on my X1 done, they didn't. Just to be sure, you can tell them you don't want anything inside the muffler. | ||

I think what he's talking about is the inset area on the top of the outside of the muffler that's below the cable "quadrant" that operates the exhaust valve. IIRC, that piece is tack-welded on top of the shaft that operates the exhaust valve, so there'd be no easy way to remove it. I'd just point out the area you're concerned with. They should be able to rotate it when they're doing the prep work and when they're applying the coating so they can get 100% (or close to it) coverage without sticking it in place. |
