Over the winter I removed about 4 lbs of plastic from the tail of my Uly and built my own tidy tail. By building my own I saved some money and had a little fun. I'm not even really sure where I could've bought one specifically for the Uly. I've always thought our bikes have the best curves of all the buells. By doing this alteration I think it really cleans it up.

So, here's the bike with all the plastic off in back;

Then I got some hardware, a slab of 1/8 thick inch aluminum, LED blinkers - $12 on ebay, and an LED stud I got from Aerostich. Then I built a template out of cardboard and made sure it fit just right and looked the way I wanted it to;

Then I cut, drilled and bent the aluminum just the way I wanted it. This took the longest. Also made sure it worked with the side racks. I decided not to build in tabs on the alum. for the blinkers. This way I could place them right where I wanted them later and tuck them in underneath better. I also decided I wanted the lic plate more under the tail than hanging out the end like most the others I've seen. This made it alittle more tricky but not impossible;

I put slots for the lic. plate so I could raise and lower the plate right where I wanted it. Then I painted it up, put a bead of caulk around the edge and let it dry before bolting it on;

And here's what it looks like all put together. It's hard to tell in an artificially lit garage, the lic. plate really reflects the flash! But you get the idea;

Nice job ! Do you hide your plate's when you ride on the road? You know people will see your number when you ride.....

Awesome!! great job. Really transforms the look of the bike. Right now, I'm using the tail to mount 2 tool tubes, but could see doing something like this in the future. Bet people would buy them. ; )

Looking forward to more pics when the racks,etc. are all put back on.

Thanks. When it ever gets nice enough to ride here in MN(some yr), I'll put it all together, drag it out into the sunlight and get a good photo. The real test comes after I ride it a bit and see how everything holds up against water, dirt, mud, vibration. But if it doesn't, I've got the stock stuff all ready to bolt back on and it didn't cost much. No modifications were done to the bike.

That's an in-wall 220v heater you see there Luftkoph. Almost mandatory to do any work in the garage in winter up here! But she does keep it nice n toasty since it's all insulated.

Nicely done!

Here is how we did ours (me and another local BadWebber): made the files for his friends plasma table, had him cut them out of 1/8" steel, bend em up and powdercoated them in black textured powder!

very nice Andy. Very clean. Was that with Sean? Mine is a bit more underneath the seat. I know you can't sell stuff on this site, but I bet there's more than a few people out here who'd like to get one of those.

Yeah with Sean. We don't intend to sell on this site, respecting their sponsor rules. In order to get our cost per unit down to about $85, we had 6 made. That makes our investment into them about 1/2 of what the only other one on the market is- Palmers bracket...and that'e not even made for our US plates!

Very nice Andy! Too bad you gotta cover up the logo with an ugly license plate.

Not to change the subject but, did you paint your primary cover gloss black? Powder coat? That bike looks great!

You can actually see the logo pretty well from the front.
