I keep hearing about a new "flash" for the ECM for 06' and 07' Uly's that changes when and how often the fan runs.

Is that something that can be downloaded to the bike with ECM spy? Or do I have to (gasp) visit my local dealership?

You heard wrong, the flash is only for 2008 and up bikes. It is not compatible with the older bikes.

You can change the fan on/off temps though.

Hey Etennuly, since you've done the manual switch, do you think it's possible to do the same thing only using the kill switch next to the throttle grip? Basically I want to be able to kill the bike and the fan at the same time. I've been looking at the schematics from the manual, but I'm not sure if bridging the fan power to this switch wouldn't mess things up with the kill switch....... Anyone know for certain?

Love the fan at shutdown. It's like tattoos USED to be, a sign of individuality.

Lots of things are possible, but you don't want to overload the switch. The fan pulls quite a few amps. So I don't know.

A toggle switch was fairly easy. I use one with a lighted tip. I have only walked away leaving it on twice so far. I had my MP3 and ear buds with my helmet all on. Did not kill the battery running for twenty minutes or so.

Uly_dude, if you toggle the kill switch back on, it stops the fan. I don't recommend this, but it works.

I don't know if turning that fan off will coke the oil http://www.exxonmobil.com/lubes/exxonmobil/emal/fi les/TTopic7_OilCoking2.pdf
in that rear cylinder but I do know that the fan definitely cools that baby down fast. Just stick your hand down where that hot air is blowing after engine shutdown and you'll get a feel for how much heat that fan is moving off the rear jug.

I did mine for a real reason. Listening to it run after shut down becomes normal after a while so you feel weird when it does not come on. I would not have changed it if the bike would have run normally without the change.

When it is warm out I run with mine on all of the time, so it never reaches those oil boiling temperatures in the first place. If it is on all the while you are riding, it is not so hot at shut down as when the 'puter tells the fan to come on.

My fan seems to run nearly all the time when I'm riding, unless I'm out on a very short putt. Usually runs for about 2-5 minutes after shutoff.

Noise doesn't bother me. In fact it's been quite the conversation piece when I'm around Harley riders.

I just want to make sure that there isn't seem better programming that EB came up with after the 2007 model year. If so, I'd want it on my bike.

Frog man, I didn't know that. I've heard other people say that just turning the bike off with that switch kills the fan, but that's not true. I'll give it a try the next time I warm it up enough(in about a month!) Unlike some of yous guys that wailing fan drives me nuts when I shut off the bike. Turns my big thumper into a whining little baby. I can't take it I tell ya! And I don't believe the two whole minutes that it runs for after shutdown saves oil from cooking, especially since it's been running already for a good hour. Who knows what 120(sec.) equates to in hexadecimal? I used to know this. I still think finding this timer value in the ECM tables and knocking it down to 1 sec would be the cleanest way of turning it off right after shut down.

The programming is based on temperature, not time. It turns off when it has cooled down, not at a specific time. If you bike is running extra hot (or the head temp sensor is malfunctioning) it will run longer than the bike that parked at the same time as you.
