Did some revamping on the XT this winter. Wolfman Expedition Dry Bags w/4 Bottle Holsters, Palmer Brackets & Acerbis handguards. Also changed out my camping gear. The XT is now at least 30# lighter and nearly a foot thinner across the azz now that the Gobi's have a new home in Texas.

I'm surprised by how much I like that look!!

Did you leave the hard case racks on to support them? I think I see them but just checkin'.

Off on a tangent here: Permanent Montana on the plate? And no annual sticker or fee? Just a one-n-done tag payment?

Nice lookin bike Itileman. I'm still hemmin and hauin about what I want for panniers. Would you mind expounding why you chose soft siders, vs. the hard cases? Your KTM Gobis were 32 liters I think, do these new ones hold more or less?

I'd like to hear more about the windscreen setup . . . thinking of looking at options soon.

Looks sharp. I'm anxious to here reports of how you like those bags. I've used soft saddlebags on my Lightnings for years, and the hard bags are the main feature that I love on my Uly- to arrive, turn 1 key and remove my bags is fantastic! ....but that fits my uses.

I like the windscreen as well. Someday I need to get over my vanity and place comfort above looks so that I can get a functional windscreen ; )

To answer a few questions/comments.

The stock racks remained on the bike. They're functional as solid support for the Wolfies and add extra support for the fuel carriers which are attached to the bags and the rack.

Motorcycle and trailer licenses in Montana are permanent. So are plates for vehicles over 20 years old. Pay once and never go to the DMV again. New tabs for vehicles can be done by mail.

I've been through at least 6 sets of different cases on my Uly. I'm not doing much in the way of "touring" and security is not a big issue in Montana. Primarily, I'm camping off the bike, so the cases stay on. Went with the Wolfman rig over the Giant Loop Great Basin and Ortlieb bags (I've had 2 sets of those on at different times) because of the bottle holster accessory and the ability to compress the bag. Neither the Giant Loop rig nor the Ortlieb's have the bottle holster option.
Weight and profile were other concerns after a lot of off the tarvy riding last year. I have a couple of additional mods yet to install to complete my "back road, dirt/gravel, dark custom, riding fool" motif'.

As for the Palmer Brackets, they're fantastic. I had a Laminar Lip on previously and that worked well, but the Palmer rig is way better. Would guess you get the same effect with the Madstad's. I'd like to try the Palmer with the short shield off an X just to see how that works. I'm short enough at 5'9" that it might run the air flow over my head.

You may notice that the shield is attached with the well nut modification which allows for removal of the shield without having to pull the flyscreen. A write-up on that exists somewhere within the bowels of Badweb's servers.

As far as the Gobis go, they're great cases, but rather large on the outside. Inside dimensions are a lot less than 32L, IIRC, the KTM version is about 25L of usable space. I can get about 21L into a Wolfie and it seems to pack better with the gear I carry now. They also weigh 3# each as opposed to 13# each for the Gobis.
I'll know pretty soon whether or not this new configuration is a keeper.
