Well after 3 years and two OEM batteries, both still good, here is my conclusion.

The battery is under rated for the bike. If the bike is standing for two weeks it is unlikely to start. Buy an Odyssey battery, not a OEM or other, replacement.

+1

It's even worse in the winter. My Uly sits in an unheated garage and often struggles to crank when it's below freezing. And yes, I'm aware of battery tenders, loose connections, fileing the paint from connections, ect........

Where is the best source/price for an Odyssey battery?

Guess I got lucky, stock battery on my 08XT and haven't had any issues. Ride it from March til late Nov in western PA. Time to keep an eye on it.

I have been thinking on adding a second smaller battery in-line with the main one. This would back on to the main one, be of a size that would fit under the seat and be about half the output of the main one. So about 50% more CCR which will really spin the engine up even on a cold day. It would, of course, take up some of that very useful under seat space.

For touring, or even not, you could always cut a battery box into the under tray. A bit over the top but you would never run out of power, LOL. Probably better of with an Oddy battery though.

I just ordered an Odyssey battery.

I'm tired with dealing with a battery that is just barely "good enough".

Thanks Tootal for the great pictorial on the Odyssey install!!

Its always been an issue with V-Twins even modern water cooled ones like the Rotax.
