Can anybody tell me if you have to take the idler pulley off to get to the rear straps. I don't really see a good way to get to them.
Any insights on disconnecting/reconnecting that little spring on the exhaust valve would be appreciated too!

The rear straps can be a bear in the factory installed position. When you put it back together, align them so that you can get to them through the spokes of the pulley with a socket and extension.
That spring is best dealt with just before you lift up the muffler. In other words, install the cable, spring and muffler in that order. Hemostats are a big help.

Hmmmm...I don't ever remember messing with the spring. I thought I just twisted the valve enough to get room to install the cable.

A second, "don't ask me how I know moment," make sure you get the screws on those clamps rotated back towards the left side of the bike far enough. If you don't, after you get that mother of a belt stretched back on you'll find that the pulley won't bolt up straight. Then you've got to take it off and do it again. Worse yet, you don't notice it and run it that way and rip the belt off. (I only did the first one, not the second.)

I've had the muffler off and on my Uly several times. I have never removed the pulley. I use a 1/4" drive universal adapter, with a deep socket and a long extension to reach clamp nuts. Just takes a little fiddling going back together.

A few here on BW have positioned the muffler clamps so they can be accessed on the left side. I did that "mod" the first time, but the resulting aesthetics did not appeal to my senses. So I put them back in the stock position.
