I have a 2009 Uly XT with about 3,500 miles that has rust starting on the belly of the muffler, and paint peeling off of the top! I know that a solution exsists with all of the ingenious people out there who ride Ulys! I would like some help on an easy fix, like a touch up without removing the muffler. What type (brand) of heat paint works the best etc. Any slick ideas welcomed. Thanks in advance for any help! | ||

I tried the POR15 rust prevention solution, but it only lasted about 6 months. This time around I simply went with rust-tough spray paint. I'll report back how well it lasts. | ||

I've got the same rust on mine - still not sure what I'm going to do about it. Looks pretty much like crap though. I think I might see if my HD dealer will get me a new one under warranty (I won't hold my breath). I don't want an aftermarket exhaust cause I like the way the stock sounds - not too loud. | ||

My re-paint using header paint lasted about a year before any rust showed. It's still holding up better than the factory paint job but it's far from perfect. The best bet for a long term solution is to have it sand blasted and either powder coated (the muffler operating temperature is supposedly cool enough for conventional powder coating) or Jet Hot coated. | ||

When 1st got Uly tried spraying on WD 40 after every use - No discernible effect. Then tried brushing on dollar store vegetable oil w/ a dollar store brush every time I saw rust. - Think it helped a lot - Easy to apply - Dried hard - Heat cooked it near black Last year: Wire brushed w/ toothbrush shaped wire brush from the dollar store Applied stove polish w/ hard, denim rags & a soft brush from the same dollar store package - Have to tear some long rags to apply the polish to the top of the muffler - Very satisfied almost no additional rust for the duration of the year (Message edited by 99Savage on February 27, 2011) | ||

Amazing that on a bike that retailed for 13g, Buell used a muffle that rusts in the 1st couple months. My 3g Korean scooter that see's 10 times the rain, at 4 years old is showing no rust. | ||

Solution is to just ride it. Rust is the new chrome. POR-15 spring and fall. I got a new one put on during the warranty. | ||

I switched from BBQ paint to Duplicolor Ceramic engine paint, and it seems to be holding up better. Another big factor is keeping to oil off it during oil changes. | ||

Terry, Make it easy on yourself, just steel wool the rust off the best you can and then hit it with some black paint. This is without removing anything, do it in place. I just grabbed a can of silver paint off my garage shelf, not high temp paint either, just cheap Krylon. Sprayed it on and it doesn't seem to matter because it has held up fine. Do what you want but you might want to go the easy route first and see how that works for you. Next time I'll go whole hog and get some glossy black krylon. Glossy paint is tougher than flat colored paints. At least that the way it works for house paints. | ||

Hey doesn't the drummer dude(Kevin, right?) just take old Uly mufflers and hack them off, remove the guts and weld on an end piece? I know that's keeping it rudementary. But my question is; what does he do to his product to keep them from rusting? | ||

I've also had good luck with Duplicolor Ceramic black on my muffler. Not a cure-all, but really does a good job of holding off the rust. | ||

I think the oil breaks down the paint, at least the black BBQ paint. Mine would always rust first where they had oil spilled on them. | ||

Last summer Topeka, Ks. HD had mine repainted under warranty. Since then I've seen no rust anywhere. Awhile back someone posted that they'd sprayed their muffler with S100 Corrosion Protection so recently I bought a can and sprayed my muffler. That was only a couple of weeks ago so it's too early to tell. I'll probably spray it again before riding season arrives and see what happens. | ||

The S-100 guy was me, Ulykan, and it is working great for me. After 14 months and 9500 miles my muffler looks like NEW! However, I don't ride off-road or on salty roads and I haven't ridden in the rain because of rear bearing concerns. That will change now with a 2010 wheel. I simply wipe the muffler down with a wet cloth every 2-3 months, dry it off and apply the S-100 and rub it all over the muffler. I also give a shot of the S-100 to the muffler bolts and other bolts on the bike. It's early, and only partially tested, but so far so good. | ||

Ride through more mud puddles. Nice coat of mud keeps mine nice and happy It works for me...my 06 is just starting to show little rust spots. It stays in a garage, but is ridden in all kinds of weather. Like others have said, its a Uly..... and if it happens to rust through in a couple places in the next 5-10 years I figure it will just breathe better. | ||
