I have a 2008 Uly XT with just over 15K miles. Two weeks ago after I had the fuel pump replaced under warranty I noticed something very peculiar. The fan turns on and runs continuously while I am riding but turns off when I slow down below 12 mph. As soon as I accelerate past 12 mph it turns right back on. It also has not turned on when I turn the bike off after a ride since the warranty work was done. In the 18 months I have owned this bike, the fan has turned on every single time I have turned the bike off after a ride regardless of the temps. They obviously had to disconnect the battery to do the work but can't think of anything else they would have had to mess with.
What gives? Personally it's actually kind of nice to turn the bike off and it be, well, off but just wanted to run this by your collective knowledge to make sure this isn't anything I should be concerned with. Will the fan burn out from running so much? Is there any reason I should be concerned?

The dealer uploaded the new ECM update, the one that updates the fan logic... nothing to worry about. It's supposed to behave like you're noticing.

It started with the 2010 models, and as far as I know is the only update that the dealers have now.

Rcinclt-

Relax and enjoy your XT. Our XT had the same behavioral change after its ECM reflash.

It's fun, or at least interesting to compare the fan cycles between our 09 XT, and our 09 X. The XT has had the comfort kit installed and ECM reflash, the 09 X has not. The X fan runs almost every time it is shut off. The XT fan runs briefly only if we've been flogging it.

I don't mind the sound of the running fans, came to expect fan-noise from the city-x. What I do appreciate is the lack of "Uly hot leg" from the XT post-comfort kit. THe Uly leg heat is manageable with my riding pants in February on the X, but I do not want to go thru a Florida summer and Orlando traffic without a comfort kit on the X.

Thanks for the input. If in fact they did a reset then that is great. For all the times we complain (me included) about our dealers I feel like I should spend an equal amount of time praising them when they do something above and beyond. I dropped off the bike to get a new fuel pump. I got it back with a new fuel pump, new spark plugs, and ECM update all in less than 2 weeks which included ordering and waiting for the pump! Thanks to the service dept. at Tilley H-D of Statesville, NC. Great job guys!

As mentioned above, this is the flash for the comfort kit. If you don't have it already you might want to consider it.

if it makes that much difference with the leg heat, maybe I should get the reflash done too.

how much does one typically run? is there a specific 'service' that I need to request so that the person I'm making the appointment with will know what I'm talking about?

The comfort kit makes the difference in leg heat. The reflash just changes when you fan runs. Many don't like the noise after shut down.

I like the noise after shutdown. Guess I'm not of the many. At least I know the engine got warm enough and that it is quick cooling the back cylinder, unlike those with this new fangled programming.

You're not alone, somehow the fan is reassuring. Well that, and I like to get the strange looks from those that expect a loud exhaust but not a loud fan.

for those with an 06 or 07 Uly, it's my understanding that you can't get the reflash for your bike. At least that's what the HD mechanic told me. But I'm not sure I believe anything those guys tell me. I'm just sayin.

The comfort kit makes the difference in leg heat. The reflash just changes when you fan runs.

The flash also makes a difference in leg heat by changing when the fan runs. I installed the comfort kit first without the flash, rode it for several months, then had the flash done last summer. My leg is much cooler since the flash.

I wouldn't go back, but I do miss the fan running after shut down as well...

It will run after shut down if it's hot enough.

I just wish my dealer would update my bike. I have asked them to update the ecm the last two times it was in. They said "ok" and yet my bike is still running with the original programming from it's March 2008 build.
I would really like to have the fan on and cooling the bike while I am riding around on base at 25mph on a hot day.

my dealer never flashed me with the 10 version even tho i bought my "09" in may of 10. couldnt really complain, bike ran great but fan was annoying after shutdown.
then i did the Erik Buell Racing ECM for stock pipes and WOW, runs fantastic and like you say, fan seems to always run over 12mph and when its really really hot, after shutdown but just for a bit.all this plus a homemade comfort kit, no more burned thighs, all i want to do is ride it!
Thanks Erik Buell Racing, really worth the 250.
